This is a rough guide on how to replace the led lights or any lights from your dash instrument panel. Please read all before any attempt to do this yourself especially if this is your first time doing it. If you are not confident at all, leave it to the experts. I have made this guide to show how easy it is to replace these bulbs which a lot of people may feel its difficult in the begining till you try them out yourself. I hope this guide will be useful to some and will give you the confidence of replacing these instrument panel bulbs confidently.
Cheers!

Step 1: Use philips (crosshead) screw driver of right size to unscrew 2 top screws on the instrument dash to remove the cover.

step 2

After removing the screws, pull the instrument dash cover from the top. As you pull, do it slowly and gentle. Pull from the sides to pull out the bottom part of the cover.

Step 3

It is better to remove the dimmer switch (with cruise control for some) which is attached with the screws. I totally removed the scews as I found that they dont really affect when is placed back propely.

Remove the cover from the right as the cables are attached to it. Unscrew the bracket and detech the cables if you want.

Step 4

Unscrew the mounting screws for the main panel unit. There should be 4 or so screws attaching it. It is not necessary to unscrew the top 2 screws as its the glass cover itself.
Do it slowly and careful not to drop them. place all screws in some order easy for you to remember. Magnetic screw driver are best recommended for the job.

Step 5

When you unscrew the screws, next step is to pull out gentle, it should just pop up easily. Do not immediately pull off the whole panel! There is probably a cable still attaching to the back of it from the left hand side.

Step 6

Remove the cable that is attaching to the main instrument panel. Use your fingers to press down the clip and remove. It should be easy.

Step 7

I recommend to take the panel out from the left as there is more room. When it is out, you will see the bulbs. They are turn on bulbs which you can buy from Mitsubishi dealers.
$8.95 was what they sold or something similar price. Count 4th bulb down to change (D) position led. Of course do a check on the bulb you take out, it should be burned out. Replace with the new one you bought and turn it in properly.

This goes the same with any other bulbs in this area which you need to change, Highbeam, passanger, break...etc.

Last step

Reverse everything that I have told you to do. meaning screwing and attaching all cables back from how it was removed. It is also a good idea to clean your glass at this time sinced it is removed. But be careful with it. Try not to wear watches or anything that may scratch the glass. The dash instrument cover is placed back by bending it a little from the top and it will squeeze back in. Remember to screw back the dimmer/cruise control switch to the cover. if not is still ok if you know how to place it back. As it will not jerk around without the screws also.

When you are done, give it a test! and you are done!

Cheers!

Good work Nexus!

Nice write up!
I like the photos!

Now go change your Auto-transmission fluid AGAIN and this time you can take pictures, so then, when I go about doing my fluid change, I have photos to guide me through the process!

LOL!

I want to see pictures!

Would love to mate, but I want to learn the brakes!!! I wish someone could do a good write up(with pictures) but however its gonna be difficult as some have ABS, etc...I just want to learn how to do mine. Its hard to just understand putting back the pistons etc when you are not sure what they meant till you actually do it. As changing brake pads would probably save me quite a bit.

Anyway just wanted to do this as it has been some common problems in the thread. and since this was easy to do I decided to show how its being done.

Cheers!

IMPORTANT NOTE:

This definitely applies to TR owners but may well apply to all.

The instrument cluster must not be allowed to face down at any time. The tacho mechanism used has a silicone dampening device which will leak.

On the 3rd Gen, I've had the instrument cluster facing down before when I was replacing it, no leaks, so I don't think it applies to 3rd Gens.

Great Instructions!

That damn "D" light had been driving me crazy ever since I got my 98 TF Magan a year ago. $9.90 for that light... here in Brissie.

While I was at it, added a couple of red LED's as the illumination lights... Completely changes the view of the cluster at night. :)

Yes, it is quite common, due to the fact that we(auto users) are almost everytime on D so is obvious that it be the first bulb to burn out. Goto Mitsubishi dealers and get the replacement bulb for $8.00+ depands on location. And just follow the steps that are provided. But if you are not confident at all then leave it to an auto electrician to do it for you.

I did that for a quick fix, especially if you are on budget, do a swap with L. It is also a good idea.

On the topic of changing light colours - how hard is it to change the speedo/tacho colour? Are these normal bulbs or LED based?

Well mines seems to have gone in the last couple of days - cause it's not working now!

that can be done with LED's or bulbs, im prety sure the LED's will be easier to come by, and much more better looking, at the back of the cluster, each number (like P,R,D,N,2,1 etc) has there own bulb, so yeah u can replace each one

*note, this is from a 2nd gen....

They'd usually be 5W wedge bulbs in most 3rd gens except latest few.

Can buy different coloured bulbs or paint yours with ceramic/transparent paint,
or buy the Narva bulb condoms in various colours (which fade pretty quickly).

G'day nexus, any chance you know which ones operate indicator/turn signal icons, most icons I assume have always been working minus " D " the deal is they changed to led's, and suddenly high beam was not showing, so given that they took them all out, spun the bulbs around and refitted them, now everything works but indicator signals, and I'm too hopeless to figure it out as to which ones they messed with in order to lose signals ( '99 TH )

G'day nexus

Seeing Mr Nexus did the first post on 06-10-2005, at 01:00 PM, do you think he is likely to answer?

The "D" light in mine went out, understandably, because it is on the most. I swapped the N globe in.
If lights are off, I'm in neutral.

Diodes have directional polarity, the LEDs that don't work just need taking out and rotating 180 degrees.
