View Full Version : Hi-Flowed Throttle Body HELP!!!

I decided about a month ago to have a crack at this. Removed the throttle body and took to it with a sandpaper barrel on a die grinder. Once the job was done I removed both the TPS and Idle speed motor and thoroughly cleaned the throttle body. I put the damn thing back together and immediately it was idling at aroun 1600 rpm!!!

The only way I was able to settle the idle was to screw the adjustment screw in hard. I have reset the TPS according to the manual but it made no difference. To be honest I don't think the car has as much power so I have onviously screwed something up somewhere and am at the end of my short tether trying to work out what it is.

Has anyone else had similar problems? Or does anyone have any suggestions as to what may be the cause.
Cheers

Sounds like you may have taken too much out of the T/B, hold the T/B up to a light with the butterfly closed if you can see any light though it your in trouble, iv been playing with my spare T/B to get it to 70mm for the last few weeks and when it came to making the butterfly i had lots of fun, even the smallest amount of light comeing though the T/B would make it idle at 1500rpm

No, I did not touch the butterfly, just either side of it.

i dont think TH smoker meant u have played with the butterfly ... i think he meant u took to much out of the TB and its now letting in a fraction to much air

when i fost got mine done i noticed it would stick something severe! it would stick at 2,500 revs but i took it out and cleaned it it seemed to be fine after that

Because the TB's are offset bored to seat the butterfly, porting too aggressively will let air (and light when held up to visually inspect for gaps) past the butterfly.

If you hold the TB up to light and there's no gap, check you've reinstalled it correctly and ATTACHED ALL AIR AND VACUUM LINES. Esp the one at the back of the plenum.

If there is a gap, you can try closing the butterfly more using the adjustable SAS screw. You will then need to reset your TPS.

i've high flowed my TB with gaps around the butterfly. (meaning in the light you can see gaps....) i've had no probs with the TB so far... idle is still at 900...
so therefore you might have not installed the tb back properly....

Yes, the next thing I am going to check is that I have no air gaps around the gasket area but it seems fine. Just to clarify: the butterfly and surrounding area was not touched at all, I did not even remove it. I just took the lips off the intake and outlet side and then polished it all. Clean the whole thing thouroghly with diesel and and an air nozel and put it back together. ( yes I took the TPS and idle control motor off first)

well the surrounding area is where your suppose to dremel off.... as there is a 'incline' bit to the butterfly....

put up a pic..that will be alot easier i think....

By the sounds of it the idle speed indicator needs to be reset since you removed it. $35-$40 at a Mitsubishi dealership.
I've got the same problem so I called them a couple of weeks ago. (hadn't had time to book the car in yet)

BTW you can't do this yourself because its eletronically calibrated.

Stripped the whole thing down again tonight, cleaned and checked the cold idle control. Think that might hav ebeen the drama. Either that or there was a small air leak between the throttle body and the manifold. So, all is well, thanks for the help.
