My car's undergoing a mechanical upgrade, so whilst the lot is out, I'm performing an ICE upgrade

Now, here's where you come in.

Car is a 1987 TN Magna.

Stock speaker locations are in the front dash. Apeture is 4", but very shallow

Rear: Parcel shelf. 6"

My budget is around $400. I have a decent HU with single RCA output, and 4 channel speaker level output.

Edit. I'm looking for stuff such as speaker type and location. My musical genres are Trance and Dance, the radio, and late 80's bubblegum pop.

Did you want to amp your speakers?
If not i'd suggest buying some $300 6" and some $100 4 inch and running off HU. Will be alright. Dont ask me brands though in this price range :P.
If going the amp route -
Run some cheap 4" off the HU, buy 2 sets of 6" speakers and make up some door pods/holes whatever in the front doors and run them amped.
Say $200 for amp and $100 per set of 6", could get some nice pioneer speakers in that range (i have a pair if you wanna hear them). Amp wise you could pick up a nice little 4 channel amp for about $150, get it all in a deal at strathfield they should do it all for $400 (including wiring kit).

I'd seeerously consider making door pods and bolt them onto ur doors instead of installing 4" speakrs. You're not going to get anywhere with 4" speakers, and you'll never be impressed with tham.

Make some fibreglass ones and get the 3'way, 8" mids on the front  (well, not for $300)

Find a pair of splits and 6s, or even 6x9s for the rear. depends on if u want to add a sub later on. u want to amp?

Can you chuck up a photo of your doors please? Are either of these the same as your doors:

nice 2nd gen door trim .... thinking of doing the same sort of thing for mine soon.

just a quick question. how did u attach the vinyl to what i assume is mdf?

contact cemement + staples, or just staples or contact cement?

also whats the best way to attach mdf to door trim?

I either hand form or vacuum form and just use industrial strength spray glue. We only staple on really difficult jobs where the vinyl has trouble sticking in corners etc. :)

Yeah, that's a standard first gen trim, mine has map pockets, which can be moved.

I'm not sure I like the way the speaker overhangs, but that's what I've been considering.

Somebody suggested splits, mount the tweeters in the original factory location, and the woofer in the door, similar to the photo above.

yeah the factory 4" is probably a decent tweater location, but make sure htey point upwards rather than the downwards facing stock 4"s as high frequencies are very directional.

Aftermarket 4" speakers do not fit into the dash without cutting, so I recommend staying away from that. If you had splits you can mount the tweeter there instead.

Beware too if you mount the speaker down the end like Fhrx. In most 1st gen's, there is a window strut attached to the door frame which should not be cut. I'm assuming that Fhrx used the pod and a shallow speaker to mount it above the inner door skin. If you do not want the speakers to overhang, you can flush mount them a little further down the door where there's room (see attachment). :D

I have a broken door trim and a blown 4" JVC so i though id try see how this would work out. Just imagine it done properly and with some nice black grills :)

Problem with this setup is that the air thingy behind that part of the trim has to be removed and you have to find speakers that have a magnet that is a little smaller than these ones.

But yeah, i reckon this would sound awsome. How are you guys getting your 6" at the bottom ? i have no holes in the doors and i dont want pods.
