Hi all,

I have a 1997 3.0 TF and was wondering if there could be a reason for my car suddenly consuming more fuel than normal.

2 weeks ago I was getting 580-600km from a tank, now I’m only getting around 500.

Any suggestions on where to start looking?

Thanks in advance.

skip it. there is nothing wrong with it. Many here have went way below that due to how they drive etc. If you want, pump in cleaner fuel like ron 98 to give it a cleaner boost. 500km its absolutely normal especially city driving.

You could be running rich have you been blowing any black smoke at start up....you could have a problem with your thermostat or you automatic choke....this was my problem on my TR

I was just wondering, would changing the AT fluid and filter be beneficial in fuel economy?
LIke, smoother gear changes and the gears being freshly lubricated etc??

And would worn out spark plugs effect fuel economy? Im thinking, YES??

I know you are going to do the ATF change so ya dont have to ask lol.
Spark plugs, Engine oil, fuel filter, all adds up.

I said skip it, wonder why u guys still feel that 500km is really bad economy????? Are u guys serious? Have seen so many others saying things as bad as 350-450kms now thats bad.
Its just maybe one of the days u are having heavier traffic. If you are a bit concern about it, use those patrol fluid cleaners. They help to clean up your fuel system a bit. I say dont go worry over this small issue, and pump it again and see how you go. Like said, pump cleaner petrol to see any difference.

LOL!

Im one of them! lol
Although Im not laughing when I open my wallet to pay at the petrol station!

The highest mileage I got out of my car on a full tank is 380kms!

Ive changed, the timing belt, Oil + Filter, Fuel filter, Air filter. Have to do my spark plugs soon as well as my ATF......

Ill see how my fuel economy goes after I change the last two....If it doesnt improve then I dont know what will help....Because I dont drive my car that hard, I dont think...

From a 72L Tank You Mean or when the light comes on. Coz i'm getting 7.5km/L. I did 380kms with 50.3L.......

Precisely I do not see the complaint compared to u guys lol. I get 8.6/L in lousy conditions
Surprisingly I get 200kms currently with less than 1/4 tank used!!! thats amazing! Try those fuel patrol cleaners maybe it helps.

500km and yur complaining :doubt: i get 350km if im lucky and thats mostly highway driving.... it looks good like i get 200km from the top half of the tank then it goes down really really quickly,

if u had a sudden change, it coulda been some dodgy petrol, maybe u put yur foot down more, or had the air con on more

Couldnt agree more, just repump with good petrol, I have heard some rumours and I only say this as I heard it off from someone else saying that Shell's fuel is lousy? How true is this or big bull altogether? As now I am using woolsworth pump and it feels ok.

Woolworths fuel is low in octane from all the stories I have heard. But then that was only when they first came out I dont really hear many stories like that anymore. I always go BP fuel, Alot of high performance cars can ONLY run on BP Ultimax, or whateva the hell their 97 Octane fuel is. So I figure BP is top fuel :D But has anyone ever noticed how BP makes ur exhaust fuems swell weird?

Hi Smap

I have the same engine/transmission as you so you could try this:

Check/replace the air filter

Replace the spark plugs with NGK Iridium front and rear

Use 3 tankfuls of Caltex 95 for it's injector-cleaning qualities

Fit an ignition earth kit (if you can't buy one separately Post or PM me and I can send you one)

Fit a ceramic TB kit for economical idle

Cheers Barry

get a compression check, if you have the car serviced regularly i wouldnt be too concerned, prolly just sparkies need cleaning or replaced, but yeah get it checked it.

my TE is running pretty good lately, getting about 8.2K/L, mix of highway and city driving, and 10L/100km on highway. i drive gentle, but of course i occasionally fang it :D .

Maybe change the fuel filter too?

go back to basics and get the injectors cleand off the car they should be cleaned every 100000km and if your running crap fuel 50000km this will make a huge differance also check your tyre pressures as many people forget, a faulty thermostat will cause u to use more fuel and get the o2 sensor checked have you done any mods on your car laitly???

haha, id love to get 500kms out of a tank! On average i get 370
i doubt there is anything worth changing to get better fuel consumption,
just put it down to the magna, as it is more a cruising car than a performance or a little fuel saver shopping trolly car ( u know which ones i mean). everyone who owns one has this problem.

man u got a serious problem mums magna is known to get up to 680klms when she first got it.

now that shes used to the car, she leadfoots and is hardly ever below 3000rpm she gets 520klms

btw its a tj 3.5 auto, which is THE worst engine/transmission combination petrol wise.

its 98ROM Octane fuel. And its called Ultimate. I use shell Optimax, which is also 98RON, and they work with ferrari F1. If they use shell products, gotta be good. lol :bowrofl:

Hi all,

Thanks for your replies.

I wanted to report back that after a few tanks of premium, a bottle of spitfire and a new air cleaner, the car is now getting around 600 km.

Cheers

Just reading all your comments...
And i have a slightly off the topic question/comment...
I generally get just over 500, sometimes 600 depending on if im doing freeway driving to school or not. Anyways, i noticed that i get about 360 - 400km - @ half way of the fuel indicator. Then the rest normally about 100 - 200. So between full and half way its really slow, then between half way and empty it drops real fast. Im not sure if this is normal or not but youd think that it would be half half wouldnt ya.

I suspect there's about 10L left when the gauge hit "E". Can someone confirm this?
