View Full Version : Questions about car horns

My questions are,
If a car does not have a horn is it defectable?
Does the horn HAVE to be attached to the steering wheel?
Will not having a horn void insurance?
The reason i ask is, recently i have upgraded to a TE steering wheel (and loving it!), but the horn mechanism is slightly different and will not work with standard gen 2 layout. Now before i did the mod i hardly ever used my horn, but lately i've had a couple of close calls (other drivers not looking when changing lanes etc.) and it gives me piece of mind to have one just in case. I was wondering if i could just hook it up to a push button, instead of the actual steering wheel button?
I know it's possible to do and know how to, just wondering on the legal side of things. Thanks guys :).
I believe you need a working horn.. I dont believe it needs to be on the steering wheel though.

The horn is designed as a warning device and as such I imagine it MUST be there but unsure if it HAS to be on the wheel it's self.

an audiable horn is required under ADR's,
I'm pretty sure (not 100%) the control switch for a horn in a light vehicle must be within reach of the driver without removing their hands from the steering wheel,
eg in XF and earlier Falcons to sound the horn you pressed down on the end of the blinker stalk and some older cars have a foot opperated horn switch.

to pust the horn you do gotta move your hand from the wheel to push the center.

I am confused here mate, I told you what you need to get this working so why don't you pop down to the wreckers, buy the SE/Verada combo switch and then plug it all in.
I have the TH Sports leather wheel, I have the horn and the cruise control working perfectly. The next thing I want to do is get the on off switch to work once I have had 10 minutes to look at a wiring diagram it will be done

They are in the wrong position then; they should be at 10 and 2 o'clock.

In short i'm lazy, i rang one place and they didn't have any so i gave up :P. So it's the indicator switch i need right?
How much should i pay for this?

i drive at gear shifter and 3 :P
i dont think it has to be on the wheel. my first car (well sorta, ts magna was my first car i could drive on the road, this one i had no liscence) was a hr holden ute. i used a boss kit and a holden racing wheel which left the horn unusable. so i went along my way to jaycar, got my self a momnetary push button switch, and mounted it just below my dials in an easy to reach position. this woud have been a great plan had the horn been in working condition but the thoery was all there :P

I remember years ago my wiper spray jets failed and I could not replace the indicator stalk which powered it, so I mounted a press button switch on my dash which did the job... only problem was when it came time to sell the car, the workshop doing the RWC stated that I had to label that buttons purpose to pass roadworthy... it looked pretty stupid with one of those label maker sticky things next to it but I had little choice.
I imagine the horn is the same.
I also had to label the gear shift knob as it had no gear position diagram
