Hi Guys,
I have a 1996 V6 Magna. I need to replace the leaking water pump and was told that timing belt has to come off to replace it. So i figured may as well replace belt too. I was wondering if anyone could tell me or show me a diagram of timing belt setup incase i run into trouble while working on car. Timing mark positions and the like...also how to set up belt tensioner if its not an auto tensioner.

Would apreciate any advice or Diagrams you guys cna help me with.
Cheers Ange

Pretty simple really, if you do not have the tool to reset the tension properly and you do not know how to do it don't.

If you over tension, you are up for a new water pump again soon

If you under tension, you are likely to loose the belt and cause big damage

Hi Mal,
Thanks for your reply mate, do u have any idea what the tool is i need to tension belt with? if its a torx or spline setup i have them here. Maybe if u know what its called and size..i can get one from tool mod nearby.

Howdy Ange
Reasonably labor intense job - engiine mount needs to be taken off etc stuff. Change all belts and tensioners/bearings since you're at it. Just had mine done.

The tool is basically a peice if rod with 2 pins, you use a small torque wrench to tension the idler pulley before you release the tensionor

I'm about to change my timing belt too, does anyone have the factory workshop manual on a CD?

Cheers

Just pay some1 to do it. changing the timing belt is an absolute pain in the A$$. I'd rather pay some1 else to sweat it out for a couple of hours changing it

Ok well..thanks to all for the advice given. The job is done, waterpump and timing belt replaced. Personally, I would never do it again. Very time consuming indeed. Had to remove heaps of stuff just to get to it. Much easier to pay someone and kick my feet up rather than spend 6 hours on my back.
