Hey fellow Magnarenies,
I have been reading some posts about mufflers and cat-back systems,
and all seem to be paying about $300-$450 fitted.
Yesterday i got quoted for a Magnaflow cat-back system fitted for $950. RPW
quoted the same thing pretty much. Why the difference???

A lot may depend on the components you're getting.
Magnaflow mufflers are, I believe, quite expensive, so that'll change things.
Even so, it does sound a little high, but what size pipe are you asking for?
Mandrel bends cost more than press bent pipe, but even so I'd think you should be able to get mandrel bent cat back pipe done up to 3" in mild steel for no more than $400, plus a muffler. A lukey high flow unit retails around $160, but the magnaflow might be $300-$400 depending on what you get.
Stainless pipe costs much more.

Are people going mild steel or stainless steel?

I expect your extra price comes from the stainless steel part. Mine is mild steel except for a stainless tip.
I figure no one is looking at the bottom of my car, and I won't own it in 10 years when the pipe starts to break down ;)

How long does is mild steel suppose to last for?

well, quite long. Im sure 90% of people have mild steel in their exhaust system, it should last a decade at least.

the main reason why people use to use s/s pipe back in the day was cos they rans that nasty "super" petrol...my old man reckons it use to rusty out the pipes pretty quickly..but yeah if u didnt pull 10 years out of mild steel id be suprised...its pretty thick stuff

Plus it depends on your driving. If your a 1km a day round to the corner shops, car never gets warm kind of driver, you'll get moisture sitting in your exhaust eating it away hence the need for stainless steel.
If teh car warms up when driving, a lot of that moisture will evapourate. I personally wouldn't be going for stainless.

So, in honest opinion.....
price/sound & flow ratio
Should i just replace the muffler with a Magnaflow,
or go the mild steel cat-back? Im thiking along the
lines of just having a good note coming from
the car. I know there is a big price difference between
Lukey Ultra-flow and the Magna flow, so, would they
both do the same thing?

go either coated thin wall mild steel or thick wall mild steel, might as well save some money, also thin wall stainless would be lighter would it not? and considering that the exhaust is almost the lowest point of the car reducing weight fromt here would make the centre of gravity higher equalling worse handling would it not?

Two muffler can have the same diameter ie 2.5" but have completely different flow function and rates.....you're after flow rate the higher the better....but it might compromise your noise levels.

i dont see how that makes sense by an exhaust being lighter.
correct me if im wrong, but it sounds ridiculous.
