Unsure what section this post belongs in, but I figured there be more auto elec people here. lol
The remote for my TF is almost dead so I went into autobarn the other day to get a quote for an alarm install.
Replacement remote from mitsu costs $80 and I managed to get my hands on a cheapo alarm system for less. Has 2 immobilisation points I think :doubt: I figured the car making some sort of noise when broken into is better than none (please correct me if i'm wrong)
Anyhow the fitter there tells me that there is no way of by passing the factory immobiliser, and that I would end up having to use both the alarm and standard remote to get the car started.
Question 1: Is this true??? (I don't want to carry around 2 remotes)
Question 2: Is the stock factory system better than a cheapo alarm?

You get what you pay for...

True there...
Is it true though that you cannot bypass the factory imoboliser and anyone wanting an alarm installed would have to carry 2 remotes??? I have personally never heard of this prob with any car

most decent installers can bypass and remove factory imobilisers, but it does add significant time and cost to the operation.

I fitted my car alarm myself and it's hooked up to the central locking. I only use 1 remote for both alarm and central locking. Isn't the ignition key part of the imoboliser??

Yes thats right, the factory immoboliser uses transponder keys, so the stock remotes won't be needed for the factory immobiliser to work. As for alarms, I don't like cheap alarms :)

I heard somewhere down the line that the factory remote actually does nothing to the immobiliser, and that its just the key. dont quote me on this though.
and yes, there must be a pretty easy way to bypass the factory immobiliser, because the people i got my car off were having problems with it cause it wouldnt let the car start al the time, so an RACQ man fixed it for them one day. and for racq to do it, it must have been a pretty easy job, cause otherwise, they dont fix nothin!

I didn't think, or had heard of anyone having to use 2 remote on any car. The autobarn tech might have been a little confused
FFEEky, you're right, every so often i've had to get into my car using the key as the remote refused to play.
So I guess my first question is answered. :)
What do people think of basic alarms over the stock keyless entry system??? The way I looked at it was that although it might be a cheap alarm, it would make some sort of noise when the car is broken into. Can anyone tell me DO's and DON'T's of going cheap alarm from experience???

I only got a cheapo, i had the same thought. Better it make some kind of noise then none at all.
But as the saying goes "you get what you pay for".
Installing the alarm was easy once i found the correct wires to tap into.
I got quoted $170 just to install an alarm.

Yea I got quoted $120 for installation. Don't know enough bout electrics to go crackin at it myself. Have you had any probs with the cheapo alarm???

......What do people think of basic alarms over the stock keyless entry.....
Hahaha.... i was away on holidays the other week, and there was this subi svx in the underground carpark that must have had a cheap alarm on it. the sound from our exhaust was enough to set its alarm off, just when i started the car. :bowrofl:
we got a video of it.. it was so funny, the people at the outrigger hate us now

ORrrrrrr This Subi SVX had a expensive alarm in it!
It could of had all those motion sensors and stuff, such as "microwave" and "ultrasonic"....those I guess are easily set-off by the littlest of things, although they can change the sensitivty settings and what not....
Just a thought........
By the way, what da heck is a Subi SVX? What car is that?

Its a subaru svx... try http://images.google.com.au/ and search for it. normally the expensive alarms dont go off for something this small, its normally the cheapest ones becuase the sensors are too sensitive and go off when a bird flaps its wings to close to it.

the cheapest ones are really a circuit, wired into your interior light that will set a siren of if a door is open.
I payed $380 for my "cheap" alarm. bonnet boot and all doors, shock and ultrasonics, as well as 3 pt immobiliser. sensitivity is ajustable on the shock sensor, but i dont really give a fffvk if it goes of when an excessevly loud car drives past. it means people will think twice before trying to steal my wheels or something like that.
