Hi all, Well yesterday i picked up the 1st gen that was offered for free. It had been sitting in a back yard for 13 months. Put a battery in it and she started up and seemed to run fine. Drove it home, lucky we are in the same suburb so i didn't have to go far. Other than the carby running really rich, it was driving surprising well.
Then i had a thought maybe i could use it as a daily driver.

When i got home i stopped in the driveway, (so i could move other cars around) went to start it again, got the dreaded crunching sound. First thought was either ring gear or starter. It eventually started and i got it in the garage.

So today i got suck into it, cleaned the interior up and cleaned out the carby, checked all fluids, changed oil. Pulled starter off and checked it, could find anything wrong, so i put it back on. To my absolute surprise it's now starting and running great, looks ok too. Fine for a daily driver.
All i have done interior wise, carpet, seat covers and put the center consol back in. Had a good look underneath no leaks, steering rack and cv boots seem ok. This thing even has air con and it works fine too.

So far i have not spent a cent on this car, there was even a full container of oil in the boot. Seat covers came from my 3rd gen (replaced them awhile ago but hadn't thrown them out yet). Carpet, had some old stuff in the garage. Next step tyres, rego and third party insurance.

Yeah the front bumper has a bit of a ding in the front. I also got spare bumpers, doors, guards, boot lids, headlights. Just a matter of painting and fitting a straight bumper.

Can't argue for the price. First gens are remarkably overengineered, but they can work for ages with little or no fuss.

Very good. A TM for free :)
The only problem is the carby, they are notoriously POS's but there are ways around that now anyways :)
