Hiya, i just got my self a fairly mint condition 93 Magna TR (Auto, V6, 3L) and i'm looking to upgrade the sound system. Now i'm a bit of a DIY guy, i like to do things my self, gives me more pride once i've done it. ;)
But, i'm fairly new to the car mod scene so any help you guys could throw at me would be great. I'm planning on buying a head unit real soon and i'd like to just take a dig around inside the magna to see how it all works.
But alas, i have no idea of how to dismantle the dash (to access the front dash speakers), i could probably fiddle around, but i don't wanna break anything. :P
Also, how would i go aobut pulling out the cassette player? I'd rather not have it immobilise its self too, so whats the go there?
Thanks for any help.

top 4", flat head screwdriver, and pop the covers out...they probably dont work and you'll notice their made of cardboard...
head unit; slide both seats forward and screws bottom back of centre console. Unattach gear stick from console and pull out. Screws x 2 obvious where centre console connects with centre of the dash...undo them andi think the face plate should pop off, all screws are obvious... have a fiddle...i started a while ago and it was hard to find my way round but now i can take my head unit out in about a minute

Ok after unscrewing a whole lot of **** i managed to figure out how it all works. I noticed there was a wire wedged inbetween the screw and the face plate of the metal holding the head unit. I didn't go any further as i figured that was the immobiliser. If i unscrew it will it lock the head unit? If so, how do i stop it? Or how can i figure out the code to unlock the head unit once its done?
That might just be the earth wire for the head unit??

thats safe to undo, they are just earthing wires, one of them most likely to the head unit.

4" speakers - Use a flat head screwdriver to pop the cover off, use a small phillips head or i used a drill bit to unscrew the old speakers, stock speaker wire is ok so just connect your new speakers to the old wire, but make sure which wire is which for when you install the head unit. If you find your new 4" speakers are too high, there is a bit of plastic going accross the bottom of the stock speaker hole, get a stanley knife and cut this away, you do not need it.
Yes dont forget the 2 screws in the ashtray.
Yes that wire that is connected to the front of your head unit mount is a ground wire, no it will not lock your radio if you take it off, you must take it off to pull the metal mount out. Once you've pulled it out its kinda like changing cd-rom drives in a computer, make sure you take note of which wire is which when cutting wires from the old head unit.
I have done this a few times so if you need any help at all add me to msn leighm85[at]hotmail.com or pm me (prefer msn) and i can step you through everything :).

My tip for replacing the head unit is to try to adapt the stock mounting bracket to your new system, saves much screwing around.
