Hi, Ive got a 94 TS magna and it has done 220k everything works fine just that when it is in idle and the engine is hot it sound really lot and taps. I wan tinking how much would it cost to recondition it or change the timing chain?
Oh yeah one more question. Can the verada head lights fit into my car? mine is really dark. I've seen magnas or veradas has thos really shinny head lights where do I get them??
Thanks for the help!

Hi and welcome to the forums...
Where are you located? Country/State/City/Suburb....
The parts for the timing chains in the car is fairly cheap, but you would also "possibaly" have to change the guides as well... they are not that expensive and I personally ALWAYS use genuine guides and chains as they last ALOT LONGER!!! The killer is the Labour!
If you know a mechanic then that is going to be your cheapest option...
People on here can help with what to and where to change stuff... But a purchase of a workshop manual will allow your mechanic to have all the correct torque settings on the bolts etc...
Hope this helps

Hey thanks!! I am located in Melbourne VIC, and yeah, new to this forum. Glad I found it!!
Anyways, I have a work shop manual and it does say alot of stuff but its really useless unless you have all the tools and such.. anyone recommend good mechanic in Melbourne ?
Thanks
the actual Timing Chain Kit, costs $170, i know as i had mine changed last week.
Labour is real kick in the nuts. I got my timing chain, counter balance chain and all the guides (the whole kit) done, also got my valves grinded, new gaskets, belts, oil filter, oil, coolant, gearbox oil (it needed it changed), for just under $900.
They basically pull the whole top, front and sump off the engine and replace all the stuff. It is a very big job, but if u consider its not going to stuff up for at least another 150,000k, its not really that much.
And trust me it is worth it, my car runs heaps better now, has regained lost power, and fuel economy has improved too.

mm.. interesting.. so what do I say to the mechanics when i want this job to be done? just change the timing chain?
or is it better that I just keep this going and let it just die and do the job?
thanks for reply

DO NOT let your timing chain go too far if the timing chain breaks then you can kiss your engine good bye have someone who knows what their doing look at it but be carefull and dont get talked in to changin it if it doesnt need to be. if i does need to be changed be verry carefull driving around save up some money and get everything done while the parts are off it will be expensive now but like Samuri said it will be sweet for another 150,000 ks

I thought that the head sits up a little so their is a little gap? meaning if the timing chain snaps, it just means that your car wont work any longer but head and pistons are all fine?

timing chains have been known to snap while driving and actually on one occasion i know of, funny as it sounds, punch through the rocker cover and bonnet. When it snaps you have a very fast peice of metal chain flying in some random direction which can cause a fair bit of damage. So it is better to replace them. But you mention engine is tapping??? and no ones mentioned tappets yet. If your lucky it may just be tappets and not timing chain, only way to tell is get someone who knows there s##t to have a listen. Also change your oils around, eg try something a little more viscous to see if that quietens it up. Also they can go for a while with timing chain nosie before something drastic happens but in doing so it can cause some wear to oil pump, sprockets and such. But if a mechanic is going to do a proper job when he replaces chain he'd replace a lot of other things in there anyway.
