They have to be made to ADR standards. So it's fine.

Have you seen the size of a detonated air bag?, just because the cover is small, does not mean the actual airbag is small

My fiances mum just got a new barina, and it doesnt have a cover for the passenger airbag, it just comes out of the dash apparently.

Thats becoming a more and more common design these days. better just get used to it

Invisible seams. (well not completely invisible usually you can see it a bit at certain angles with the right light)Bear in mind they've been doing it on the steering wheel airbag for a while now on various cars, so they've just started doing it the passenger one.

Yeah my brothers Astra has a similar setup. You can see the seams where it would crack open in the event one did deployed.

I guess some manufacturers like to have a cover as its cheaper to replace the cover than a whole dash panel if the air bag did go off.

The Audi A6 has been without a seperate airbag cover since 1998, and its damn expensive to replace the dash i one of these, even today, i still prefer the seperate cover, for cost, but as far as aesthetics go i much prefer the other style

I'm not too fond of airbags. But anyway...I wouldn't really worry about it, generally if you wear your seatbelt properly and it does it's job you don't really need that dash airbag anyway. Here's a better solution, don't crash :P I wouldn't really be worried about it, we have some of the most stringent design rules (especially safety wise) in the world.
