View Full Version : How Can I Paint Rims?

[TUFFTR]

hello all,

after taking delivery of "gerard"s rims yesterday i gave them a clean today to see how they would come up.

i coated them all in degreaser and high pressure washed them off, then used an air compressor to blow most of the water off.

what i noticed was most of the black in the centre of the rim has come off, and some on the outside of the rim has also come off

now is there a type of paint i can get from say super cheap or autobarn, in a can, that would last for yonks on a wheel?

although electronics isnt my forte so far (im workin on it:P), painting im not to bad at, so i dont mind giving it a go.

i have a good 6 months to spray these rims so it doesnt have to come in a hurry.

here are some pics after i cleaned em
Rims 1 (http://i9.photobucket.com/albums/a52/dodgeviper89/Rims2013.jpg)
Rims 2 (http://i9.photobucket.com/albums/a52/dodgeviper89/Rims2012.jpg)
Rims 3 (http://i9.photobucket.com/albums/a52/dodgeviper89/d535754a.jpg)
Rims 4 (http://i9.photobucket.com/albums/a52/dodgeviper89/Rims2004.jpg)
Rims 5 (http://i9.photobucket.com/albums/a52/dodgeviper89/Rims2003.jpg)

if most people on here think spraying the rims is a bad idea, could you give me a cheap, long lasting solution?

Cheers Everyone, Paul

sweet guys, i like the caliper paint idea as it is a tough paint too, good suggestion.

any more?

first off you'll want somthing for the paint to stick
go to bunnings and in the paint section look for a tin called ESP easy surface prep
about $10 for a small tin
all you do is wash and clean the surface
apply ESP
wait 5 minutes and wipe off
wait a further 90 minutes and then paint

and as wheels dont get that hot (normal road use)
you can use any paint you want

u dont need to prep the surface (apart from removing dirt and grease and wax) to paint metal with calliper paint.

hmmmm.......ok i think i have this sorted, ill blast as much crap off the rims as i can ( as the 1st time i just did it lightly), ill then clean em by hand, and subsequently paint them, piece of pi$$!!!!

another question i pose, is there anyway to bring up the shine in the alloy? JIF or something?

u wont polish alloy with JIF......rofl........

a polishing wheel is ideal, but u dont want to take off material. to polish alloy properly takes a lot of time and patience, u could try a buffing wheel and some AUTOSOL, but it wouldnt be as good as doin it properly.

if you have a bench grinder at home
go bunnings and go to the tools section and get a calico buff and a light wax $30-$40
tell the the guys there what you are doing and they will give you the right wax
whatch out what ever you polish gets HOT!!

[TUFFTR]

ok well i guess it cant hurt to get some autosol.
ill try that

thanks samurai

jellico - yes i have a bench grinder at home, and if i cant get the wheels looking ok with some autosol ill do it that way.
i just cleaned one rim back to front with jif, i have 2 tshirts that are now black from all the brake dust! - not even the high pressure washer would get rid of the brake dust!
after i cleaned the inside black bits of the rim, most of the paint came off, honestly it was covering most of the worn paint, so now ill have to paint the whole black bit of the rim, which doesnt phase me as it cant be to hard.

but yes the only thing concerning me atm is the condition of the alloy - although if the wheels were on the car, and you were looking at the wheels you couldnt notice the alloy is a bit dirty, but since i got em on my bench its quite visible, they sort of look like dirty underneath, but yes thats the fun in 2nd hand wheels!

ill try autosol and if that doesnt work i might have to try and polsih em

Check under "Primer, Paint & Coatings" if you want to do it super well. Personally, I'd strip or sand/sandblast the mag back, prime with "Tie-coat Primer", colour with any colour on Earth that takes your fancy. Leave for 2weeks. Polish this up REALLY WELL. Coat with "Glisten PC". The Glisten dries rock hard, glossy and chemical resistant. They reckon it resists being struck with a hammer!! I'm going to use it as stonechip defence. It can also be polished down the track if needed. Hope this helps your project ;)

i was hoping just to give the black parts a light sand back, prime, and top coat, i didnt think it would be this much work!!!!!!!
as for the alloy parts, i was hoping a metal polish would bring it back to some life, as i really dont want to be sandblasting these wheels back, or else its just not worth it $$$ wise. dont forget i still have to buy tyres for these buggers.

if you could recommend something like this but in a spray can form, it would be easier.

basically what im after is a scratch resistant paint for the inside of the wheels.

Thought about powder coating? :D

A bit more expensive I know but if your planning to keep them, the result is well worth it. Just shop around, last time I enquired I was quoted roughlly $100-$120 per rim.

[TUFFTR]
20-10-2005, 01:07 PM
mate i plan on keeping them for a few years, the only reason i bought them was becuase they were cheap, were in VIC, and fitted a magna.
as it stands here are the costs
wheels = $300
rubber = anywhere between $70 and $200
powdercoating = approx $400 for all 4 rims

so if i powdercoat these wheels, total cost will be approx $700 without rubber. at the moment im looking at 2nd hand tyres (NOT RETREADS) so hopefuly i will be able to pick up tyres for around 70 each.

im turning 17 tomorrow and well i dont have all the money in the world, this is why i want to paint them myself, i was looking at getting them chrome dipped, but i have no idea how much that is a rim.

i think the brake caliper paint looks like the way ill go, but EZ Boy has said its not that good, so if i get some time ill head down to a paint shop and see what they say.

thanks for the idea but in the end i could just buy new rims+tyres for the same price

well i bough some Septone brake and caliper paint, and some autosol metal polish.
i got the brake and caliper paint as it said, highly durable, resists brake dust (or some sh|t like that) and has a high melting point. it also had some other advantages on there aswell, im confident this paint will work well.

the metal polish is AMAZING. i only did a few sections of the wheel but it look BRAND NEW. if anyone has alloys here, omg, get some of this stuff it is unbeliveable.

ill be painting and cleaning the wheels in the following weeks, for now im just giving them a REALLY GOOD clean.

ill keep yas all posted

[TUFFTR]

well ive cleaned the alloy of 3 of the wheels so far.......its very time consuming
clean alloy - 1 hour a rim
jif the black bits - 30 minutes a rim
jif the inside of the rim - 40 minutes a rim
apint the black bits again - 1-2 hours a rim

so yeah its taking time but holy moley these wheels are looking LEET!!!
pictures....

mmmmmmm... (http://i9.photobucket.com/albums/a52/dodgeviper89/pics003.jpg)

i gotta say there looking almost a bright silver now which is good cause i dont like dull alloy.
ive painted 3/4 of rim today in the black calpier paint (satin black) and my god its looking a treat. ill be getting new tyres soon aswell so everythings coming along nicely.

when i wash the car, ill put these wheels on and take some pics just for you guys :P
ill keep yas updated even though i think no-one cares :P

looks good. once you've got the wheels all done, u might wanna give em a couple coats of clear coat. as they wont stay that shiney forever.

????????
the alloy bits on the wheel, are clear coated.
or are you talking about the black inner bits of the rim?
(i painted them satin black as i didnt want them to override the alloy look with the shine)
(but if its better to clear coat the black bits then i may have to do that!)

and thanks for the comments guys, only 363 days till i get my "P"s now, im sure hanging out to come on a cruise next year i tell ya that!

if the alloy is already clear coated then u didnt need autosol to shine it up. but thats what i was talkin about anyway, clearcoatin the alloy.

The anchor lacquer spray paint seems to be ok. I spray painted my old SL/E rims gold and they turned out wicked.

the rims are gone now so i dont know if it stayed on lol

yeah the alloy is clearcoated, but well im not trying to disagree with you, but the autosol has bought new life into these rims, i mean the alloy parts of the rim now sparkle, and i tryed jif aswell, but it just didnt do it right.

may i ask what you would of used to get all the years and years of baked on brake dust off these rims?

oh and btw ive finished painting + polishing one rim and ZOMG looks awesome, ill post up piccys tomorrow:)

 What are you putting Jif on?!?! That stuff is like grit in moisturiser, if it is on the silver surface you might end up dulling it down with minute scratching.

ooooooooo nono no my good man i aint that stupid!.

i used jif on the inside of the rim to clean off years of dirt stuck to the surface of the rim, its now a grey color, which i did not know exsisted.

for the alloy parts im just polishing it by hand with autosol bit by painfull bit.

and for the black parts, im sanding it down with 400grit sandpaper, followed by an 800Grit Sandpaper, followed by 1500grit sandpaper, its maily to remove brake dust and loose paint. im not actually stripping the metal back, that would just take to long :P

ive started spraying the 2nd rim, and bit by bit im getting there, for some reason the polished alloy just keeps getting dirty...or im just being pedantic.....i dont really know!

but as i said if anyone has polished alloys, autosol is bloody magic stuff
