A while ago I received a *spare* 1st Gen TB for development work. I have some pics to post of the finished item. You can see how close to the water jacket(?) we took the bore increase.
It is yet to be installed and evaluated. Fingers crossed!!
Approx 55mm Butterfly. Increase in volume of 24% (factoring butterfly rail).
I'll advise pricing when SUCESSFUL test results are in.

I'm looking at going into production with these - after all, I still have 3 extra butterflies I wouldn't feel right about sitting on a dusty shelf ;) .
The owner of the TB will evaluate on our behalf. Should be an exciting week ahead.

do tell how to bolt and efi tb onto a carb? :bowrofl:
Yes. I am interested too. Saves me pulling my car apart to replace the manifold!

tedorsidic, this is not for your car, this is for efi cars only, it has nothing to do with carby cars,

All this webber talk time for some EFI fun :gtfo: 55MM TB in the above post is installed on a stock plenum, i have another plenum here that will be modified to suit the new TB, now for the report: alot more responsive from idle and im happy to say the stock ECU can handle the TB at wide open the car pulls nice and hard with no ping. idle is 900 rpm when at running temp on mild day 25C also you could bore this further but the plenum walls are to thin to port match such a large bore.
Pic's of stock TB and Bored:

Wow! I must say it appears to have exceeded my expectations. Nice clip! A must-see, even if you're like me on 56k.
Hows the power, accel, fuel econ etc. Has the power curve changed?

Fuel econ well its probly gorn to the dogs this week as im playing with it :) big improvment is it has got alot more punch down low, acceleration is smooth across the board so dam hard not to speed u dont have to push the loud button down verry far at all, only setback ive had was i had to tension the accelerator spring & the car sounds louder both intake & exhaust :/ in the clip where u see the tacho tip 6k that wasnt wide open just a few short taps on accel, if you have exhaust mods to your car this is worth doing.
EZ if i have no probs by friday ill send up my tb less stepper etc 55mm seems rite on the money props to your nice work.
Cheers PeteW

yeah that lip is insane the plenum bore is larger than the bore of the stock tb where the butterfly is u can see by the mark left on the back of my old tb from the gasket.
Basicly if you remove the idle stepper motor & the mounts for the plugs & tps etc from the tb (5 screws & 2 for the tps) to do this chage over all you would need to do would be is put them on the bored tb and back the idle stop off about half a turn, its plug and play really

40mm throttlebody flows X amount at 25% throttle
55mm throttlebody flows X amount at 20% throttle
your used to putting your foot down the certain amount to get it rolling, that amount opens a bigger valve now which makes the car go faster down low. it is nothing you couldnt have achieved with the old throttle body by simply applying a little more throttle.
WOT vs WOT the car has no extra power due to other restrictions on the intake system, its all just down low feel.

80mm cai > K&N Filter > maf > 80mm pipe > 55mm TB > plenum id say we just losened one of the larger bottlenecks in the intake system by 5mm.

yep, and gained maybe 1kw at the most. Did you do pre and post vacuum readings for the throttle body, you will find that there was no measurable pressure difference through it. Ive done the tests on other 4 bangers.
Do you understand what i mean about the down low noticable power gain though?
the 1.6L daihatsu applause TB is 55mm too, and the 1L efi jobby is 52mm.

yes more air flow at same throttle pos

yep, and a smaller TB on a stock motor isn't going to be a bottleneck, more just better throttle control and linear power.

if its turbo, then a 55mm throttle body is going to be way to small.
im in the hunt for a 55mm one atm for my 993cc :bowrofl:

would be better than a stock TR dont u think ? ! ":bowrofl:"

Not really no, there is no turbo to spool or head work to warrent or require extra flow. It justs puts his TPS out of allignment, down low throttle control harder and he will probably use more fuel.

just a small update the modded plenum has been fitted today along with a new gaskets match, see pic (modded left right stock) we bored as far as we could without risking cracking then flowed and intake runners also have been cleaned up as the casting on these arnt so good.
Fuel usage after 1 week with the 55mm tb & stock plenum here is the numbers: stock tb 280/5kms 32/34ltrs normal? driving: oversized 290kms 30ltrs driving harder than i would on 91oct timing 17btd & mods listed in my sig.
Diff? better throttle responce down low as tc said their is more are volume passing into the motor at the same throttle position but on top of that my motor revs more free to redline in 1 - 4 gear 5th? with the plenum mod the torque band falls off later and "seems" to come on from 1000-1500rpm drop off is noticable at 4800-5k, imho its a mod worth doing im happy with the results

u know more about my bros car than he does :O all this time i thought it had a t3 turbo with a list of other extensive mods :O:O
to be honnest tc the tb is the missing upgrade to this car. a 55 mm will do fine thanx. not chassing a million hp just a responsive motor to have fun with. ever read about choosing the right holley for ur v8? the general assumtion is bigger is always better but it comes to a point where ur oversizing too far and causing flow restrictions.. similar to exhausts really

Nice work. What did you use to get up into the runners?
Have you noticed any improvement with the flowed plenum?
PeteW
15-11-2005, 09:49 PM
a friend cleaned the runners up with the dremal (sp) the bored/flowed plenum just adds to what the tb does if your going to put an oversized tb on you should taper the plenum i mean i drove it for a week on a stock one but with the plenum done its  i think rpw sells a tapered plenum to suit their tb's and its just a machined stock one basicly what i done to my spare

digging up an old thread :) cold weather is here and the car has been stalling out with the throttle body when cold and returning to idle, got off my ass and fixed it last weekend by adjusting the gap on the stepper motor & idle stop when its cold the car starts with just a turn of the key all fixed and happy when its warm nice 850/900 rpm idle cold 1100/1200, must have been out of wack on the spare car that the TB and bits came off as it was running gas (some mofo swiped all the gas gear befor i got it :( )

I might get my old man into doing these - seeings as he did Pete's tb. We still have 3 butterflies so I'll twist his arm when I see him next and see what he reckons.
How much?? Dunno. We'll see how long it takes and work it out from there.
