Hi all...I have a 92 TR injected 2.6 wagon (EXE) that when u are Hwy driving it will just power down like someone is hitting a kill switch!
Its started doing this a week or so ago and now does it often.
Its a ***** to start and wants to go then just cuts out and comes back on.
The ignition leads, plugs ,fuel filter dissy cap,air filter have all be replaced.
No difference.....wondering if it could be the engine management computer or something else?
Even the mechanics are in a muddle!
Car done 190 000km and in good nick
Any ideas..its my work wagon and this is abig worry...
thanks...simon

so ur saying the mechanics cant find a problem either?
explain what u mean by 'power down'.. is it just the engine thats cutting in and out or the electrics aswell? Alternator maybe?
or yea could be the computer.

yeah..just cuts out and looses revs instantly..like its the electrics..

Does a CHECK ENGINE LIGHT stay on?
It would be easy to get the code and see what the problem was, otherwise try a new mechanic.
Thinking it could be the fuel pump relay maybe - but would need to be checked (check engine light stays on)
Hows the battery, how old?
If this mechanic cant find the problem, take it to another - its not safe driving with the car cutting out?
Hi there, I had a similar thing happen to my KS Verada. Apparently it is a common problem that the idle controller (aka stepper motor or IAC Motor) in the 1991-1996 Magnas/Veradas can fail suddenly, or so I'm told.
DO NOT, however, go to Mitsubishi to get it replaced. They charged me $475 for it, fitted.
However, I realised that the actual spare part itself only costs about $90.
See if an independent mechanic can do it for you, for a good deal cheaper. It only took about 30min to get fitted.

Does it "rev down" and then pick up again?
Sounds exactly like what i had, and yes some mechanics had no idea that i went to, the family mechanic found the problem in 5 mins (he knows his **** on astrons).
Sounds like the ISC motor, i just got a reco changeover throttle body for $90 and it's worked perfectly fine ever since. I also had trouble with starting the car and cutting out.

ISC wouldn't account for it dropping out whilst highway driving, I don't think. If you have your foot on the accelerator, it wouldn't matter what your idle was set at. ISC cutouts happen when you take your foot off the accelerator, and it drops revs under the sustainable level due to the idle not being set by the ISC.

Sorry i think i meant the TPS, this is part of the same whole unit, which could also be causing trouble. I think my whole unit was just shot so we replaced it :).

Give your dizzy connector a wiggly while its idleing , if it starts jerking then its either corroded too much or one of the leads is broken. Can cause the engine to cut out any given time. Also try to check fuel pressure a dying pump will get quite noisy .

I know next to nothing about the inner workings of a car, but i doubt it'll be something like a loose cable. He says it only happens on the highway; a rather smooth and painless (for the car) part of travelling. So if it was a loose cable wouldn't you think the highway would be the last place you'd be getting shorts?

hmm, i get the same problem. I had been gettign it a lot, but not much recently. When the revs drop, i can hear a clicking sound, sounds electric.
But i think my ICS is ****ed (did the whole no idle thing, foot off accelerator), took it to get fixed at mitsubishi, all they did was ajusted the idle so it didn't stall!!!
So when i put on A/C the revs drop to like 400... not good... stalls ocasionally

My TR did just that exactly , kinda scary when traveling at 100k and to hear the fuel pump solenoid switch off (lucky I had a can of contact cleaner). Same with the fuel pump , it can take a half hour to overheat then the engine just dies. With the pump dying usually the idle will be poor as well though.

the speed sensor from the gearbox can cause problems like this. the engine sense lots of revs and load but no speed so it goes into an abuse mode.
