View Full Version : Compressing Springs

Im sure this has been asked heaps of times before, i did a search and couldnt find what i wanted.. so anyway, im getting superlow springs for the front of my car, and i already got these resonably high king springs in the back (i think theyre king, they are yellow!) so now im wondering what to do. Whether i should compress my rears so that it allows my car to sit even, or just buy some lows.
What are the problems with compressing? Ive heard that it can be really unsafe and they could break, but im not too flash with these things. Also, if i was to have superlows at the front, and lows at the back, would the car look to sit even in the front compared to the back?? One last thing, how much does compressing springs cost?
Any input would be great, thanks
Greg

Buy lower springs, compressing is dangerous and illegal.

Could you imagine how much damage a bolt flying off a spring compressor would do if it failed? The springs are made to carry a whole car and rebound when the whole load increases.
Thats a lot of pressure for a few tensile bolts... would highly recommend not to do it.
A pair of lows for the back are like $115 anyway... not much really.
And its an illegal mod so insurance won't cover you if you crash due to non-compliant susp.
So not worth it.

Theres a couple of ways to do it.
1 is mechanically, see Danstraz response. Double ditto.
Another is to heat em up and compress them and cool them while compressed.
They become very brittle and the 2 sides are never the same. Interesting handling to say the least. Insurance right off as well.
Buy the right ones, you'll be a lot better off, and try to keep the car as level as stock so that your braking characteristics stay the same. :D

theres only one way to compress springs and thats to heat them up and treat them so they are still strong.
personally i dont think compressing springs is bad, it doesnt provide the best ride and there is ****all chance they will break (they arent that much weaker then a non compressed spring)
ive driven on compressed springs for 2 years and gave them a bloody beating
if u want smooth springs then dont go any lower than superlows

By the way, you asked if supers on the front and lows on the back look ok...
With the massive wheel arches on the 3rd gens, this is a perfect combination. The car sits comfortably low and level (from what I've seen and heard). I'm planning this combination myself and I've done a fair bot of research into it.
If you search, I'm sure you'll find threads on how they ride and how low they sit.
Here's a pic of Righty's car I found

He's got supers on the front and lows on the back.

I had the springs compressed on a vs commodore i had. After about 4 months the shocks were f**** . Anyways, i ended up finding out it was because the springs were compressed to an unsuitable level which stuffed the suspension. Not good! Few of my mates had fairly similar issues, one with a Magna. No way in hell would i do it on my TL. Oh and it also voids your insurance, shall something go wrong.

You DONT fit lowered springs to std shocks, it will simply handle crap. It might have less body roll but that really doesn't affect handling as much as everybody things it does. The way to do it properly is to have heavy valved struts to match your higher strength springs, or it will end up being a bogandore dumped on its guts but handles like a Ford F250

exactly.....
people blame the springs for ****ing everything up but at the end of the day its the tightarses who dont upgrade the shocks to suit the lowered springs.
yes, having too low of springs will affect geometry, shortened strengthened shocks will help the ride and give you more travel.
however stuffing your cvs is another issue of too lowered fwd cars

Hey guys, thanks everyone for your input! Im starting to sway towards getting just the low springs, seems like the safe option at the moment.
While im posting, i may aswell ask, i relaize that its not a good idea to leave the standard shocks in after lowering a car, but say if i left them as they are for a while, could it do any damage? or will the damage only b dont to the shocks themselves? How much would i be looking to spend for a decent set of shocks??
Thanks!

Oh and another thing im curious to know, u guys say that compressed springs void insurance straight away, and fair enough, thats easy to understand, but then im thinking, arent superlows at the front going below legal height? so doesnt this also void insuarnce with most companies? And ive got other mods which arent considered legal such as 20% window tint, (i havent told the insurance company about that one yet) and doesnt that also void it? off topic from my original post, but im just curious

if you dont tell your insurance about your mods, then they will void it straight away....
you should tell your insurance EVERYTHING and make sure its in black and white...
with 20% tint... give it some time under the sun and it will fade abit...
with superlows being under legal limit (<100mm) then pretty much voided as well...
cos certain insurance companies will tell you that you can mod anything you want so long as its roadworthy...

if you have lowered springs and stock shocks, should be okay for a little while.. but as every1 said, if your gonna lower the car, change the shocks as well...
Buy lower springs, compressing is dangerous and illegal.
No it's not (dangerous or illegal)
Pfft.
Only illegal if they are too low.

if your going just lows then you dont have to replace the shocks until they are rooted

super lows are not illegal ....... not sure is u know the guy ( VTXTC ) but he got defected with super lows on for being to low, he took it to regency and said the cop stuffed up the fronts were just leagal and the rears had a bit of space.... ( maybe other way around ) but yeah in adelaide they aint to low they r just right:)
