hey guys.

its time for my 45 000 service. i was quoted $350 without air filter for it. My dad said it sounds like alot as he owns a 2003 ford GTP and his is only $200. Would the 45 000 possibly be a bigger service then normal or are they trying to rip me?....

this is from Northstar Mitsubishi (kippa ring, qld)

your thoughts?...suggestions?..

thanks

From memory - 45,000Km is a relatively "major" service on the TJ's...... without checking my owners manual, I think they flush and renew the coolant and trans, as well as a few other things.

I remember paying in the vicinity of $300+ for mine at a Mitsubishi service centre, although if there's more than 1 in your area, ring around because they don't all charge the same. Having said that - there's probably ~$100 to be saved by having the service completed somewhere other than mitsubishi. It's up to you.....

Yeah they change trans fluid, and coolant depending on when you changed coolant as thats a 2year or 45k item, and the front 3 plugs, plus normal service

Thats why i service my own magna and other peoples magnas because of the expensive price of a dealer service and i can still stamp the log book with my service stamp

what a load of bullsht! your employer is gonna love you!! already spinning the typical dealership rubbish!

im with Tim-E, stuff going to a mitsubishi dealership, or any dealership for that matter! They are generally way over priced, and quite often you will get an unsupervised apprentice doing all the work on your car.. i have even heard of dealerships using un-qualified accessory fitters to do services during the really busy times! these places are only interested in turn-over, ie how many cars they can get done in a day! basically your car will get the bare minimum done to it and they wont check the rest of the car for faults unless YOU point them out

Go ring around your local mechanics and get yourself some quotes. Places like repco, ultra-tune and those kinds of places, they are usualy fairly good but ofcourse they are all franchises so occasionally you will get one dodgy operator, but there usually not too hard to spot. I take my car to a bridgestone tyre and auto joint in brisbane and have always been impressed. Good prices and they do the work, and if i ever question something they always take me out to the car and run me through it, or show me the part they replaced to show that it actually was stuffed etc, none of this "nah mate we threw it out already ay.. and the rubbish has already been collected today ay, sorry mate but trust me it was stuffed :shifty:

Ugh, dealership services... don't get me started. It'd be cheaper to get it done elsewhere like others have said. Ring around and talk to some different places. Go to where you feel most comfortable with. Or, if price is not an issue, go to a dealership.

im not doubting that other places arent dodgy too, whats the old saying? find a good mechanic you should keep em for life? All im saying is that i have never EVER had a good experience at a dealership, and the price is always inflated. I know they work off an hourly charge + parts, but quite often they will quote slightly longer times to do a certain job, or they will charge more per hour. Dont think all mechanics do that tho! my mechanic charges me a flat service fee which doesnt change no matter how much work needs to be done on that service, plus parts ofcourse. The only time he charges on a time basis is when he is doing major mechanical repairs such as replacing your engines head or something.

I went to a dealership once to have something on my first magna refitted, it took the mechanic 3 minutes (i watched him) yet they charged me for 30 mins work because "we only charge on half hourly intervals" After a howling protest from myself that its completely unreasonable to be charged 30 mins for 3 mins i eventually said "you have my address, if your that anal about it you can send me the bill" and i walked out. And yes they did bloody send the bill! and when i sent a letter back to the manager (without payment!) explaining everything i think he gave up cos i havent heard from them since

are you a qualified mechanic? I need a 45K service in about 3K's time. I am in the Northern Suburbs.

Why dont u service it ur self? Put good oil in, Platinams in the front, K&N filter. Platnams (how the **** do u spell it) cost $16 each, good oil $45, coolant, that would not be expensive $30 maby, trans fluid ummm $50? no idea, but that cant add up to $410, not even with a K&N airfilter.

Ummm getting ur car serviced by someone else who is a qualified mechanic does not void ur ner car warranty it voilds a dealer warranty.

you just answered your own question, many people wont service their car themselfs because it cant be stamped by a qualified mechanic and therefore voids new car warranty and also looks bad when it comes time to sell

I've never taken a single car I've owned to a delaership or mechanic unless it's been something I or my dad couldn't fix.

Insofar as servicing goes, follow the service manual that comes with the car. It tells you in great detail what needs to be done at each point of the cars life.

But if your really concerned about resale value regarding service, I believe most mechanics can stamp the service manual of your car & it doesn't void the warranty.

why dont yu's just ask before serviceing how they charge for services? - I did that when I bought my Verada - simple, through the dealership they have a flat charge $115 minor service, $150 major service, not including parts like timing belts and such, just the regular things, plugs, filters, oils.....fluids...., ask and you will learn....its like dealing with the government, they wont tell you if you dont ask...and then its a matter of knowing what to ask!
