Just how much am I looking at here?
My mum reckons it will be many hundreds of dollars?
im 18 and Male so obviously the insurance will be through the roof. I dont think I will go comprehensive though, If I crash the car, well so be it I guess.
What insurance company's is everyone with, and how much are you paying? My current excess is $850.
Also ive never had a car rego'd before, what needs to be done? Cost?
Yarg cars are expensive.

you the only person to ever drive in your family???? lol
rego:
your in nsw.. so i am only estimating... greenslip 3rd party $563 then RTA rego $285
Note: This greenslip is not a 3rd party property damage cover..... lol
(have had to tell too many ppl this.......)
then insurance.... if your going to drive without insurance.... YOU R A TOOL...
prices for comprehensive?? not sure as there are sooo many companies you can go with...
but at around 18, maybe $1500???

Never said id drive without insurance, just not comp. 3rd party property is fine. And that all sounds stupidly expensive :(
And no im not the only one to drive in my family... but as im taking ownership and will be the sole driver of my magna, I will need to take care of rego etc, something I have not had to do before.

6 cyl is approx $650 to register I think... haven't had to register mine yet so i'm just guessing. As far as insurance goes, get a few online quotes...

Just Cars (http://www.justcarinsurance.com.au/)
NRMA - Full Comp (http://www.nrma.com.au/PremiumEstimates/carcomppeintro)

how does $440 for 12 months and a 6 make you SAD  I'd be jumping for joy if my rego was $440 for 12 months, ****, it's something like 670 in adelaide,
Or are you just counting cost of rego, and not all the taxes and compulsory insurance and levies etc

got my car under dads name on full comp and i jus paid mine 3 weeks ago $650 :D . downside of that is that when i do later on get the car insured under my name ill start with the worst rating ever. but atleast i can save up till im ready to get it insured under my name.

yea my rego is 452.25 for 12 mths in Perth 3.5L V6, my full comp ins is some thing like $870 for a year thats with the car ins for 16,990 60% no claim and a 23yr old driver SGIO.
think their age excess for a 18 yr old driver is $700 bucks. .
What ever you do atleast make sure you get third party ins to cover the damage of the other car?? i learnt my lesson when i was on P's driving with out ins causing like 4k damage which i had to pay out of my pocket ouch is all i can say!! ( dameage to my car and theirs )
Think SGIO has a deal on ATM offering a no claim bonus for the years you have been driving and not the years that you have been ins so cheek it out mate well worth it even if you only ins with them for a year and shop around for a better deal the following ;)

Ive been told that using an insurance broker can save you alot of time and some money as long as you tell them every detail of your car, driving record etc etc
perhaps it might be beneficial to split your comprehensive insurance up into monthly payments?? thats if you want to do that, and it might relieve some pressure of car bill period.
i have the same thing coming up in decemeber... will probobly set me back around 800. plus 110 a month for nrma full comprehensive.
im with RACQ... full comp insurance. I pay $1500 a yr thereabouts. I have insured it for an agreed value of $10,400. I have told them about my lowered suspension, mags and stereo. I only told them my mags were $2,000 and my stereo was $800. I am also a rating 4 as i am 19 and have never had an accident nor a claim at all. i end up paying $124.28 a month... i find it easier to budget this way.
as for rego... i dunno... i forget. and i cant find the paperwork.

You're getting ripped... I pay, $1490 with Just Car, with Hire Car, windscreen etc... insured for $11,990 (M/Value is ~7000), and I'm a Rating 6 (0% NCD) by Just Car's System (they count full years on an insurance policy).
i tried just car. it was $1250 a year. but they would only insure for market value and required the lump yearly sum. so i decided not to go with them.

I was gonna go with just car, and then talking to some friends about them, i dont think i would touch them, they sound dodgey as.. i had a friend with a wrx who had full comp with them, it got stolen and smashed up, and they took 6 months to process the claim and get the ball rolling on getting his car fixed, then, as they advertise choice of repairer, all that means is that they give you a list of 3 dodgey as mech's and make you go and get quotes from them and then you have to let them know how much each quote was, and then they tell you to book it in with the cheapest one. all this when he is payin almost 5000 a year for insurance!
Im currently with racq, who are great. i had an accident a year ago when a girl on her l's decided to pick up her friends and go to school and not worry about stop signs. racq had the car at a repairer straight from the crash scene, and had it all fixed within 5 weeks. i had to do nothing but wait for my car, they did everything else for me.

I get some varying reports from Just Car. I know one guy who smashed his Skyline, he was paying $3500 full comp, had insured it at M/Value (roughly ~25,000), and had heaps of engine mods (BOV, Intercooler etc) that he had not told Just Car about (due to increase in premiums)... and they paid out almost 30k, within about 6 weeks.
In contrast, similar to your case... I know a bloke who crashed his Celica, he paid 10k for it, insured for M/Value (they said ~9000), when he crashed it.... they were hesitant to even offer 4k, and it took him 4 months just to get that figure... another 2-3 months to get another 2k out of them.
I'm thinking of changing my insurer when GIO's new 'Just Car' type insurer comes through... but I feel Just Car is pretty good thus far.

The thing about Just Cars is they don't do pay by the month. Not sure about most other people, but I for one don't have $1000 cash to fork out in one lump sum. People with higher insurance's than mine would most likely be in the same boat.

iv always paid mine up front, saves you in the end, just have to learn to save your money and budget fo it through the year. If you cant afford the insurance you cant afford the car is my point of view

Fair enough. I'm just saying that $1000+ is a lot upfront for insurance. And not everyone can budget like that... Some of us have lots of other expenses. :doubt:

Perhaps. Logically, you pay the $1000 upfront (and defer the other expenses momentarily), and then you don't have to worry about insurance for another 12 months. Furthermore, you save money on Monthly Installment fee's, and you're entitled to a generous insurance refund if you decide, a little while in, that you're not happy and want to change. The money you save throughout the 12 months, prepares you for the next bout of insurance (usually cheaper) and more (savings on fees).
Made sense to me... I never even looked at Monthly Installments when I was selecting insurance... I'd advise others to do the same, if I was in a position to... advise....

yeh i have other expenses but i just try and always keep a spare $2g or so lying around for a rainy day, have 2 mortgages to pay off, rate, strata fees, 3 phone bills, elec bills, girl friend\soon to be wife bills, wedding costs next yr
the way i see it if my car breaks down next week or i have an accident and have to claim on insurance, i will need to come up with $1500 so its just easier to have spare cash in the bank for these rainy days, cause when it rains it normally pours as i ahve found out, writing off my old TP one week bought a new car 2 weeks later and then 3 weeks after that i clipped a roo on the way to newy doing $3G damage so obvioudly i had to claim it on insurance
once you get into a routine you just always have that buffer in the account to keep you going, but thats just how i find it anyways

I agree 100%.
A nice chunk of cash, to buffer any fees you might incur helps heaps. For example, I didn't even begin looking at buying a 10k car (the magna) until I had $3000 in the bank, and all other commitments either paid for, or definitely payable without dinting the 3k. I didn't even put the 3k towards the car at all. Rather, I used it for insurance, rego, RACQ check, and servicing etc and I still had plenty of cash left over to sit in the bank in case anything else pops up.
Despite this, I don't think I'm great with money... Damn attractive advertisements... feeding my consumer tastes... bah.

Just checked at NRMA, quoted $470 for 3rd party property. Not too bad I guess. I really dont see the point in full Comp. Why pay all that when i MIGHT crash it, and if I do its likely that the repairs will likely be less then the cost of Compo. I only paid $4k for the car (well im still paying it off actually) so paying like 1/3 of what I paid for it just to cover a big maybe is a waste of money to me. Im not stupid enough to not get 3rd party property though, If i smash into someones mercedes I would never be able to afford the repairs on that.
Paying for rego alone or insurance alone wouldnt be so bad, but I have to pay for
Insurance
Rego
Having ownership of the car transfered to my name which is even more. Bah

I had to renewal my insurance policy about 2 weeks ago, so I was like a mad man running around trying to find a better insurer. No luck however, ended up staying with NRMA (RACQ equivalent).
Originally the new policy consisted of dropping my agreed value from $13,000 down to $9,500, taking away my 'Choice of repairer', up my NCD to 55% at a premium of $1300 (down from ~$2000 I was paying before, plus I'm only 21).
Anyway there was no way I would insure my car for <$10,000, my car is worth more than that! So the highest agreed value I could take home was $11,000, added my new mods (suspension stuff), and added the choice of repairer option, with the final premium being $1600.
If it were feasible, I would have gone with Suncorp GIO, but would have costed me >$2000 even at 60% NCD.
Made some quotes on Just Car and AAMI, premium was a little higher, but I didn't like the agreed value, plus there were certain things I didn't like about the policy, like choice of repairer, and issues when unlisted drivers are involved in an accident.
Budget Direct Insurance wern't too bad, but they wouldn't do an agreed value until I have an accident, so I won't be guaranteed on a writeout. Other issues were mods, they didn't like my mildly lowered suspension. So if you have no major mods, then this may be for you, its premium are cheaper then others.

I guess if your car is worth $4k then it might not be worth getting comp. However do remember that comp also insures you for fire and theft, and I think also natural disasters.

Nothing can be as bad as paying $1600 insurance for a TR. (Full comp)

The car is probably worth more than 4k, its just my dad was nice enough to sell it to me for that price.
