That ticking noise is really starting to get to me now, so its time to fix the tappets.
Now do they need replacing or just adjusting?
I took the rocker cover off the other day for the first time just to have a look inside, i love pulling things apart.
I have a workshop manual aswell that i will go through thoroughly, but is it as simple as taking the rocker cover off then removing the roller arms and taking the tappets out?

The tappets installed in Mitsubishi engines are self adjusting, you won't be able to do anything to them yourself. If you're keen on pulling the rockers apart, be sure to unbolt them evenly, and although it's unlikely, you run the risk of possibly snapping a roller arm if there's uneven pressure on it.
You'll also need to watch out for the camshaft, as the tension from the timing belt will pull down on one end, so it's a good idea to have a henchman to hold the camshaft in the head, and pull the end off the roller assembly that corresponds to the end of the camshaft, and bolt it back down.
What grade of oil are you running? How much oil is there in your engine? I use a 20W50 in my 3L, and I can barely hear the tappets at operating temperature.

run a good engine flush with thin oil for 20 min drain it out refill with new oil and filter if this doesnt fix the noise they need replacing

Actually yes you can do something about the tappets before buying a whole new set (which would cost me >$500 for 24 lifters).
These hydraulic lifters are filled with diesel. Basically what you want to do is flush out the diesel and bleed new diesel back in.
The details should be in your workshop manual. I found it in my Gregory's manual for the TR/TS, and the one in my TH Mitsu service manual is even more detailed!

Yer, ive read all about bleeding the tappets. Using a thin wire you push down in the middle of the tappets or something like that.
Its all in the workshop manual, but I just wasnt sure if thats what I should do because it didnt say "In the even of tappets making that awfull tapping sound bleed them" you know what i mean :p
So just good old diesel from the gas station ay

Yep. It's all good. You'll know when a lifter isn't working terribly well when you bleed the tappets, thats how you know which one to replace I think.
Been meaning to do this for a while and see if it'll work, but I havn't had the time.

having a 4 cylinder myself and replacing my own tappets i can tell you its reasonably easy. Go with non genuine from repco which cost i think off memory about $110 for all 8 and took me about an hour and a half to replace them all. im using now a 15w40 oil which runs smoothly without a worry but no its not magnatec as thats a crap oil.
