is it possible to change from manual to automatic transmitions. i have a tr exec and am lazy so i want to get an auto but have sentimental value for this tr. i am prepared to do the work myself. on a rough estimate i will need the auto transmition, new dials for (p,r,n,d etc) kickdown cable, oil cooler. is anything else needed and what would be the approxamate cost?
thanks in advance

I'd imagine it would take a friggin long time!
Especially time in planning the changeover. I'll swap you my auto for your manual :P.

but what needs to be changed? i know oil cooler for tranny dash for p,r,n indicators, actual tranny, kickdown cable. will the radiator need to be changed or is the oil cooler seperate? and will the ecu need to be replaced to control the auto(dont know what changes it :doubt: ) and will new loom for the dash be needed or is it there but not used on the manual.
thanks for the input so far :D

Well you'll definately need the TCU out of an auto, and i'm not sure about the ECU, but if you took the ECU's out and swapped them over, i cant see you running into too much trouble.

found out by service manual need at least 3 looms. 1 for tcu which goes underseat, another for dash cluster (prn etc) and one for tranny tunnel. apparantly minor alterations need to be done to transmition tunnel. so not worth it in a 2200 car. thanks for the help guys.
btw why do they have a transmition tunnel for a front wheel drive. the exhast doesnt go there so wtf

It's not a straight swap. There's the stuff you mentioned plus the hassle of wiring extra things that might not be in the manual loom
You'd be better off selling the manual and getting an Auto. It'd be cheaper

it is a straight swap.
swap your manual car for someone elses auto car
manuals are very desired for. im sure someone will want your manual.

Aside from wiring, there are no structural changes such as tunnel.
There are no computers under seats.
If you were to find a member with an auto that wanted a manual, the swap would be as easy as and could be done in a weekend to both cars with no hassles at all.
I am sure there is an auto driver out there that would love to do this.
The looms that need changing are easy to change when the dash is out, getting the dash out is also easy.

ill go to the wreaker and sus out the looms and crap. but in the service manual i have it says the tcu (transmition control unit) is "inside the car under the seat" very specific isnt it. hahaha. so ill see. im tired of clutching in the city but have driven auto only a number of times but liked it. mmm ill also go and 'test drive' some autos for sale to see if its good :D

I have converted a 4cyl auto TR to a manual,
heres what I can think of that you will need to do the reverse:
auto trans with mount, torque convertor flex-plate and sandwich plates.
Auto radiator (with trans cooler) and/or an external transmission cooler.
auto selector, cable, firewall seal and console
auto instrument cluster.
auto brake pedal
main engine wiring loom to suit an auto, (if you have cruise then you need an auto loom with cruise) (manuals already have the dash loom for the auto instrument cluster unused)
TCU and mounting plate (located on the tunnel under the dash)
Finally a rubber plug or something to seal up the hole in the firewall from the clutch master cylinder.
an auto to manual swap or vice-versa can be done without removing the dashboard. but the carpet in the LH footwell has to be lifted and the console and stereo have to be removed.
pulling the main wiring loom and all the plugs through the firewall while working behind the AC evaporator and fan box can be a bit tricky but it can be done.

Mate if i was you i'd do a straight swap with an auto member, then all you'd be paying is for labour :), Could even ask madmagna to help out ;).
