last night my neutral light started flashing and i lost 1st and 4th gear when i start off from a stand still it is like a manual box with a slipping clutch. it only started after i hosed down my engine bay for last nights cruise and it was sugested to me that i got water in the selector switch and if i blew it out it should come good.

but i did this and the othere two plugs on the gear box and still same thing.

if i turn the car off and restart it its ok untill i drive for 10 or so metres and the neutral flashes again and i loose 1st and 4th and it has a bit of a shudder.

so what i am asking is if anyone else has had this before and weather i need to replace box or it is a simple thing that can fix it ( ive also been told the computer could be at fault also)

your thoughts appreciated.

Hi All this is my first post on this forum, I have a 96 TF magna 3.0 (the first of the angular shap - I think it's a TF forgive my ignorance) and I have just had an accident and needed to borrow a car off someone. Would you believe that they lent me their 1996 TF 3.0 and it has the exact same problem you just described.
You drive off and it seems as though it's stuck in first then at the shift you get a clunk & jolt then nuetral flashes and it feels a bit sluggish/stuttery. Take offs are really slow unless you pull over and turn the car off and on again. But sometimes this wont actually fix it - you need to drive for a few minutes with nuetral flashing then do it and she's ok again.

Did you replace or service the input shaft sensor? Did this fix it for you and can you tell me how much it set you back - I would like to try & fix it for the guy as a show of my appreciation for lending me his car?

I believe this is called "limp" mode. Basically means the transmission computer has detected an error in a sensor, and is protecting the gearbox against further damage. The only way to see what sensor is playing up is to plug a diagnostics cable into the cars diagnostics port and connect it to a computer, mitsubishi can do this, sometimes for free.

Don't know how to post up a page from a PDF, but according to the service manual there are 2 sensors on the top of the transmission.

One is input shaft sensor, the other output shaft sensor.

Try cleaning contacts, check connections etc.

D/C battery first, of course, but you never know your luck.

Might be as simple as poor connection. :D
