spring compressors :P
nah but seriously, its a set of 2 clamps which go on either side of the spring and wind tighter bit by bit. it just so happens i changed my springs yesterday from my racing springs to the run arounds now the race season is over.

nah dont use spring clamps to compress springs for driving (bloody stupid)
to compress a spring properly they actually heat the spring up and heat treat it to still maintain its strength cost around $70 for a pair to compress

its bad dont do it. and illegal to. its as bad as cutting the spring. when you compress the spring with the compressing things they can come off on bumps and things. if they do come off they go fast really fast. so do the safe and legal thing by getting professional lowered suuspension bout 300 per wheel for shocks springs and installation. well worth it makes a better ride too. :D

generally when most people talk about compressing a spring it is heating them up and compressing the coils down to suited height....
i dont know where everyone gets this spring clamp business from
compressing the spring doing it the right way (heating them up way) is legal if you keep it above state regulations limits

Yeah i heard about the clamp thing and i didnt think it was much of a good idea.
So its about $70 to get 2 springs heated and compressed,so 140 for front and back.

yep, then you just gotta find someone to do it for ya

31-10-2005, 08:54 AM
So what sorta places do it.?
SYNRGY

if you have a spring manufacturer in your state they should do it, also a few suspension places do it. im not in your state so i wouldnt know
in adelaide we have a place called industrial springs (also known as aurora)

I thought you ment compress the springs to have them removed. Dont listen to me lol
Dont compress and heat treat springs, spring strength is calculated from a variation of # of coils, coil diamter and wire width. At least if yuo cut springs they become firmer and will be less likely to bottom out. Compressing and heat treating keeps the same spring rate and is designed to be soft, so if low and soft your going to clap out the bump stops pretty fast, and shag your shocks.
But yes, like everyone else said, its a bad idea.

Well was just talkin to my dad and he thinks we still have the old springs lying around out at a friends place (hes a mechanic) and he said we might be able to cut them and see how it goes so we arnt distroying the ones we have in it now.

I race on cut, uncaptive springs
I also drive daily on those springs durring the season, but my monster swaybars keep them captive 100%
Cut your spares until they are ONLY JUST captive and see how it feels. they just have to stay captive, and make sure they are closed.

rofl, your telling him compressing heat treating is bad yet you are asking him to cut them!
compressing the spring will make the ride firmer (yes cos you are keeping the same amount of coils and reducing the height) but cutting the springs will make your car sloppy gallopy as when you chop them you pretty much release the spring rate.
bah who cares tho eh i drove around on cut springs for ages, anyone who has been in my car when i had them will tell you its the worst ride of your life

what he said! .... both his car and under8d ( as i have said in another thread) had compressed springs for very long time, ive had a ride in under8d and its a very stiff ride,
u can tell a car with chopped springs compared to compressed springs driving side by side ... the one with compressed springs just sits solid.
also one of my best mastes has a CH lancer with compressed springs down to bump stops ... nothing dangerous or illegal avout it ... industrail compresed it for him, it sits on legal height and is a VERY tight right handles very well. ( and this car had these springs in when he got off a defect)
if compressing springs was illegal then srping places like undustrial wouldnt do them, i mean i cant i i ever heard industrial chopping springs ... why? ... its dangerous and illegal

if your springs are more then 50,000kms old, dont compress them
get new ones if u want to go lower.

dude you dont have to drive like a dickhead..thats the thing with chopped springs they are unpredictable, your not puttin yaself in danger but everyone else on the road too.

Yeah. thats why we are gonna cut the old springs and if it **** we will put the lower uncut ones back in and go from there
maybe ill have to by lower springs or something.

you do what you want, im just explaining to people reading this thread about the differences between the two :D
but yeah also alot of it comes down to how low you actually wanna go

your putting 8 inch wide wheels that means you will have 235 wide tires and prob 35-40 profile tyres. fit the wheels first because you may not fit them on the car. plus with wheels like that you will prob want the front higher at least half an inch clearence sou you can turn and go over a bump at the same time. as before fit the wheels first and then decide if you want it lowered. and since they will be expensive go the profesionally lowered option. with new shocks and springs. if you need it lowered but still find out first if it needs to be lowered. can almost garantee if you current wheels and tyres are at the same level at the front as the before picture as in the rear you will not have to lower at the front(garantee holds no sway and will not be honoured lol )

Yeah im getting the wheels on tomorrow, im just trying to find out the best thing to do if i need it to be that little bit lower. That is all.

nope, number of coils is the denominator in a spring rate equation.
my car is far from sloppy gallopy mate http://forums.eis.net.au/images/smiles/icon_rolleyes.gif

So then...what other way is there of lowering your car if you only wanted to lower it by say 10mm or so? Most "low" springs are 30mm etc..

? anyone?
Have the springs professionally 'reset' or compressed. You are then able to dictate important things like height and spring rates etc.

Thanks man
Any idea where this can be done and for how much?
We have a place here in Adelaide called Adelaide Industrial springs.
They will do it for you if you send the springs to them and specify what you want. But i'm sure there is somewhere similar in NSW.
Not sure on price but only a cupla green backs max.
