Hey guy's

sorry to bring this subject up again, but I am thinking of getting a power flush for my transmission. Just been quoted $220 by Mitsubishi, but want to hear a few opinions.
My tranny has a rough shift from 3rd-4th, it seems indecisive for a bit, then changes with a jolt. I have read all the other posts about, and it seems everyone recomends either a reset of ECU, or a flush of the tranny. Done the reset, but no luck, so flush is next step. My question is, how does a flush fix only the one shift, shouldn't all shifts be rough if a flush is needed, I just do not understand that bit.
Oh, my car is a 98 TF Exec,

Cheers

a flush MIGHT improve the situation but i doubt it will resolve it. $220 is abit steep. i paid $195 a year ago including a filter for a flush at mitsu. tough luck buddy... guess you have to live with it. magna cogs are shiat...

It doesn't seem to cure the problem, ive seen it a few times and they all have had flushes and serviced. Its unlucky mate but nothing you can really do.

Check your tranny cooler isn't full of bugs and mud though, its worth a look.

Pls check with other Mitsubishi dealers, they may have different prices. $220 is a bit ex, you might want to get the Filter and go to any other shop to do a flush for you.
And it may not 100% solve the problem. These are only some advise that we give, it could be your trans that is failing ultimately, have it checked.

The reason it can only affect certain gear changes, and be fixed buy a flush is due to blockages/restrictions in the transmission valve body

Is there a additive that can be poured into the tranny oil to flush it like you can with engine oil? Coz i think i need to do it too. Is there an oil filter for the tranny?

What part of the country you from? try YellowPages (http://www.yellowpages.com.au) and search for automatic transmission in your local area and make a couple phone calls. you could save yourself up to about $70 there.

A transmission flush is not actually that difficult and could be done at home. it is done by removing the tranny return line from the oil cooler. have some spare fluid close by and position a bucket under the car to catch the fluid coming out.this process should be done quickly to prevent tranny running dry. make sure car is in park and turn car on. slowly feed fresh tranny fluid in and keep an eye on fluid exitting the car wait until the fluid coming out is fresh and get someone to put their foot on the brake and run through the gears. when all fluid coming out is clean stop car and replace the return line from the oil cooler. then remove tranny sump, (this fluid should be reuseable but check condition anyway) and replace filter and sump gasket. U should then brake open filter and check for bits of metal, this should give some idea as to the condition of tranny. You will probally go through about 15ltrs of tranny fluid.
doing this at home will probaly set u back about $100

Have you checked to see if the fluid is at the proper level? While at operating temprature, in nuetral and car's on a flat/even surface. Did you look at the fluid on the dip stick? is it dark or smells burnt? If so change the fluid and filter.

If u are interested to do it yourself. Pick up a haynes repair manual as it covers this. basically they say to get the car on a flat surface. If the cars been driven before hand and still hot....give it 30mins. otherwise turn the car on....go from P to 1, then 1 to P. Pull out the ATF dipstick beside the panel filter and check to see if the atf is past the "hot" level. If so...replace the fluid, also look out for signs of burnt oil.

I couldn't see wether you mentioned that you have an auto or manual. My auto has a bolt at the tranny much like the engine oil sump. That bolt is magnetic and catches most of the shards and other things that float in the oil.

I would say get the oil from mitsi (about $30 for 5l) and go somewhere else to get it flushed. Will be much cheaper.
Youda... you mentioned that you would go through 15l of oil. That's nuts. When i did my flush, i only put in 5l. When you check manual, you will see that tranny will have a total of 7 or 8l of oil. So why do you go through so much?

Getting the transmission flushed will help out a bit. Mine use to flare a bit, and the flush helped out.

Don't goto mitsu though. Goto a sole transmission servicing shop. From memory theres 2 degrees of flushing. Flushing that leaves some oil there of a substantial quantity, and another that flushes the system completely. My money is on the mitsu dealer only doing the former.

So why do you go through so much? the old fluid left in the torque convertor needs to changed... the only way to get the old fluid out of there is to pump the old fluid out while feeding in new fluid. Changing the fluid does not get the old fluid out of the torque convertor - instead you are mixing contaminated fluid with new fluid. you keep putting in new fluid till the fluid that is being pumped out is clean bright red.

I got quoted also for a flush from mitsubishi for 220 bucks. A bit steep i thought. SO i bought 2 x 5l of mitsubishi tranny oil and also bought a filter. Brought it to an auto tranny specialist and i paid 90 for them to put the filter and do a full flush. I was told that only 90% comes out in a full flush. I was then told to bring the car back in 10ks to do another flush and that sould get pretty much all of the crap out. After that he said every 20000kms and ur tranny should last a long time.
