I got an oil catch can (inlet/outlet and a ventilator filter on top). I read in another post that they are illegal? Does anyone know if this is the case? I can't see why they would be... they aren't exactly a performance part or anything...?

If you have a ventilator filter then it will be illegal, as oil fumes are let out through the filter.

If you have a solid one with no filter - then its fine.

The best ones include the ones that drain back into the sump.

bugger, the one i have has a ventilator on the top (with a little filter) :( So is that illegal in all states? (an ADR thing)?

yeh they are illegal with the little filters on it because they release the oil vapours into the atmosphere

I think they are illegal in Tasmania due to them venting oil vapour to the atmosphere (even if it does go through a filter  ), but because its Tasmania you probably dont have to worry too much, so long as you dont piss off a cop heaps.

u can attach it as long as u dont provoke cops to check ur bonnet then ull be right

its not so much the police or a defect that i'm worried about - more insurance. Eg: i cause an accident and then they see that i have an illegal item in the car, which voids insurance...

Yeah I'll see if I can exchange it for one that is not ventilated...

The venting ones are also not compatible with the Mitsubishi magna air flow meter vehicles because it will allow the vheicle to suck air back through the unit into the pcv system seperate to the air flow meter, run the car lean and damage it due to un metered air being sucked into the system. Mind you - you will probably pick up around 10 km / 1 litre until the engine seizes

Seriously - get the non external filter / internal units cause they are also both legal to use, recomended and compatible with your car.

And also contrary to beleif, hook it up not to the PCV valve but to the other outlet between rear of rocker cover and air inlet tube. Cause at normal driving low vacuem, the exhaust fumes don't do any damage but at wide open throttle, low vacuem, the PCV valve closes which means the catch can is doing nothing, meanwhile all the nasty oil fumes are being breathed in by the other non seperated breather and doing lots of nasty things.

Or the alternative is to instead, hook both the PCV line (Minus the pCV valve) and the rocker cover breather into the catch can, then hook up an inline PCV valve from one of the outlets of the catch can back to the intake manifold (So that it is being filtered all the time and closes on low vacuem) and have the second outlet back to the intake tube so that way you have the best of both worlds. The air being filtered at all times.

But just gets a little messy with the tubing thats all. But seriously, the most damage with the oil fumes is on acceleration not cruise which is where you want to catch it on acceleration where the damage is being done.
