yo people, heres the deal. I have a redback performance rear muffler on my car, i dont know what model it is sorry, but its really giving me the sh!ts! Its not a particularly loud exhaust compared to other things you can get, but the thing still drones like a mutha ****er at low revs, especially when its under load going up hills and stuff at constant revs. I also tend to suffer frequent headaches and having a droning exhaust really doesnt help that particular medical issue!!
I really like the sound of the exhaust, but i just cant stand the drone! I only wanna hear the thing when im strapping it, i dont wanna hear it when im toiling around in the inner city on my way to work! Its a real case of just being over it here. I was thinking about maybe getting the mitsubishi factory performance muffler as fitted to the VRX and ralliarts, but im guessing this would be fairly expensive?? anyone know for sure???
So the other way i was thinking was another aftermarket one, but something that is fairly quiet and doesnt drone so much! I heard that the lukey "original glass pack" mufflers where almost as quiet as factory exhausts, but had better flow and a better exhaust note then factory, if so then this would be pretty much exactly what im after. Does anyone have any info they can give me with regard to this?? I am gonna go talk to an exhaust shop, but i wanna have some info from other people before i do this incase i get some jackass trying to take advantage of my limited knowledge!
any help would be great, thanks for reading my long post

i don't know how bad the droning is in the redback but my lukey LR2779 (??) drones a fair bit too. incidentally, although they say the LR2779 is basically the same one used in the VRX but i actually think the VRX was substantially quieter at low revs compared to my car.
but is there a high-flow muffler that offers a louder exhaust note at high revs but yet has little to no droning at low revs? i dunno... haven't heard of one, but you could prob get a better muffler with less droning, although that might mean cutting down on the overall loudness of the exhaust note. even the stock sports mufflers on bmw 330's drone a fair bit.

yeah the LR2779 is what lukey calls there "race" mufflers isnit? they have another one called "original glass pack" or something like that, the speil on the website claims it still a performance muffler, but is quieter.. but not so convinced.
Anyone know if a muffler shop will be willing to fit a muffler and let me go for a drive around the block, and if i dont like it they will take it off again? i'd really like to try it before i commit to it.. but dont know if they will let me

i don't think any muffler shop would be willing to do that. getting your car up on the hoist to install the muffler not only means that there is labour involved but also it is down-time for which the hoist could be used for another job. but good muffler shops should have a very good idea of what their different mufflers sound like. so talk to them i reckon. at the end of the day if the droning is something you really cannot take, then it's back to the stock muffler

i use to be able to put up with it cos i loved the sound it made when i got up it! but as i said, constant headaches have really forced my hand on this issue... but i dont wanna go back to stock!!!!!

You could try Barry's fuel rail kit. Others have reported that it lessens droning.

any resonators after the cat??

any resonators after the cat??
my exhaust has the stock centre muffler and resonator, only the rear muffler was changed.
Spoke to a bloke at my local exhaust shop, he reckons a lukey muffler with a centre expansion chamber or something should give me the noise level im after. Obviously it wont flow aswell as my current muffler which is basically straight through, but it will atleast flow better then stock. Anyway we'll see how it goes, gets fitted next friday

Hi RJL25
Sorry to hear about headaches
I have same engine/transmission as you. I fitted a Lukey sports to my TJ exec. and the drone was so bad I seriously considered removing it just to save my marriage.
Well, almost.
The drone is usually worse when engine is under load, and is mostly caused by incomplete combustion resonances beyond the headers, the exhaust pipe acting like an amplifier.
If you would like to try my Kit, it should not only reduce the noise to a low level, it will also improve acceleration response and reduce carbon build-up on pistons and valves.
I would be happy for you to fit it on a guaranteed-to-work or all money back basis
I will also give you an ignition grounding Kit and an EGR Kit no charge.
Pm me for details if interested, although I won't be back online until Mon
Cheers, Barry

IMO the main problem is just simply incorrectly designed Magna exhaust system alltogether.
Diameters etc are not correct to provide uninterrupted flow at certain revs, 1800 - 2000.
I had it bad with XForce only, wowh! Got 30-40 % lesser with headers, but it's still there.
I have driven std Verada, and even in that one u can still hear the rumble at those revs - it's just that the Magna std muffler is SO restrictive, that it blocks any noise (and flow...).
I'd like to know what kind of sound is on Magnas with totally, correctly re-built exhaust.
BTW, my old crappy 2.3 L Volvo has 4-1 headers std, no resonators, one muffler (second one died, yes, 2 mufflers originally, no resonators at all). It does not have any resonances, well designed pipes, u see.
I have Barry's Fuel Vaporising Kit (love that word!), but I haven't noticed much diff in the sound, but I keep driving again and try to experiment/assess.

hi barry, i havent had a chance yet to read that thread which explains your kit in full yet, but i will when i get a chance (very busy with uni and stuff atm). Ill defently keep it in mind and contact you if i am interested
also, this may seem like a silly question, but what is an ignition grounding kit and EGR kit (doesnt magna's come standard with some kind of EGR thingy???) and what does it do?

yeah i was told by the exhaust shop today that if i got the whole system done, extractors, cat and proper cat back exhaust, he could guarantee that there would be very little droning, if any at all, but at this stage i cant afford to go down that route, so unfortunately im just gonna have to go with a more restrictive exhaust for the moment.. but atleast its not as bad as stock!

I think u're not alone... I'd like to have all new stainless pipes..... but for some reason Mrs K considers it unnecessary. But why?????
