Yes this morning on my way into town to start my courier work I was "picked" by a VK Calais 5.0ltr V8. I mean to say this lump of cast iron with a carbie against my shinny 3.5ltr V6 all alloy machine. At Bell St and Sydney Rd he found out how pathetic his car really is.
Then this arvo on my way to Reservoir for my final drop this guy in a VT SS 3.8 Lump of cast iron V6 picked me. At the Corner of Mahoneys and Elgar Rd's turning right towards Massey St off we went. With ABBA's "Dancing Queen" playing loud I put my foot down and cleared away from the old cast iron piece of junk. The as we headed down Massey Ave he decided to tail gate me, this was when I found out how quick is the Magna driving the Auto Manually.... :) it's much quicker than a V6 VT ss(notice the small s's). It's quite scary when one's not ready for that take off, specially coming out of a round about. Talk about torque steer!!!
Anyway from now on.... on Fridays I'm a going Commode hunting!

Ha that's funny, I just push my power button, that takes it to just over 6000rpm over and I'm just leaving it in D. All u can here is all the air being sucked in. 5.7lt at 6000rpm = a **** load of air.

very true, thats why i left the commodore camp and came here not really for speed and performance, if i wanted that i would have bought an XR6 Turbo, i just wanted something a little different and with refinement to boot
commodores have power buttons, just holds the gears longer

Well done. But just wondering about something.
It's a VT SS right? That means it was supercharged and they are noticeably faster than any auto 3.5 wagon.
Apart from that, good stuff.

VT SS should only be 5Litre V8 in Series 1 and 5.7 Gen 3 in Series two, although there were some very limited SS's released with V6, just had the bodykit, i doubt it would have been an SS, probably an S.
I think we're or i'm getting too picky here.
the point is she beat a holden, but if it was a N/A V6, then yeah, well that happens every day basically

sncdly there are sum VTss which are supacharged V6's a m8 of a m8 has one of the slappas they go nowhere fast. they were limited aparrently. (VERY LIMITEED :P :P)

Ummmmmm I'd have to disagree there. They may be limited (like all cars with factory forced induction) but they still hauled ass, enough to put an even moderately modded auto magna in it's place.
I'd believe the VT SS which was allegedly beated was a 5L V8 (I'm sure the GenIII didn't come till VT series II - but I could be wrong), and I'd believe it was a VT S which had the same kit as the SS - hence a 3.8L ecotech.

anyway you managed to beat some cars with very similar power outputs and very similar weights.. its really not much of an achievement sorry

id disagree with u again as ive raced a few s\c vts and i havnt lost yet in fact there was a cruise earlyier last year or so where a few of the amc on cruise blew past this s\c commo that tried to run a few of us.so im not sue they "haul ASS" but they myte go a lil bit better than an average V6 Ecotec.

I can guarantee you that a supercharged 3.8L v6 ecotech and a 5L v8 would both nail a 3.5L to the ground. Absolutely no competition whatsoever. As much as I like magnas, you guys are dreaming.
Sorry.
Enjoy driving the car, and have a bit of fun on the road, but don't be dangerous about it (not saying you were) and don't claim anything untill you have a dyno sheet or a track time to prove it. Otherwise you may cop a bit of sceptisizm... from me :D
Cheers,

Not wise to rip into a group of people just because they drive a non-magna
It's a bit closed minded and negative really, and the thread will end up being closed.

a S/C V6 commodore should be quicker then a magna.. should! But for some reason i have heard of a number of ones that where rather soft for some reason..
anyway if you get a S/C commodore it is sooooooooo incredibly easy and cheap to get powre out of these suckers! Theres a company which manufactures a kit for them that basically includes a new supercharger pulley that ups the boost to 10psi, plus a CAI and some new roller rockers that have a different ratio to stock (basically has the same effect as putting a different cam in, but ALOT cheaper) and i think the power of this kit is around 230kw for only around 2k! its been a while since i read about this kit, so i may be a bit off the mark, but im pretty sure thats about right

From what I've read/heard, they were tuned down a bit like the BA XR6T series I to give the V8's a bit more headroom. I wouldn't expect a limited edition 'bolt-on' accessory to perform as well as it should tho. It's a blower, but its just holden having a go at something new. An ecotech with boost still goes hard tho...

:bowrofl: 3,8L 'S' is no competition for TJ magna! and LS1 -well .magna is faster a lot faster up to 80-90 kmh .Trust me I owned few "SS" ,"V6 SV" "185" and all kind of utes.

The Supercharged V6 had 170kw and were lathargic in application of Acceleration but had good top end...
The Only ones that you have to worry about in the Commodore Camp is a 5litre VR manual or a 5.7 Gen 3..

Where do these people come from?
A 3.8L VT V6 commodore and a 3.5L v6 magna, both of the same year, would be pretty evenly matched up the quarter. I'd pick the commodore for the first 50 or so (more torque and rwd), the magna would go better through the midrange, but top out early, leaving the commodore on top.
Bearing in mind the 3.8L 'S' is the same car with skirting, same result.
The 3.8L supercharged calais is the same car again with forced induction, same result.
5.0Lv8 would kill the magna off the line (loads more torque and RWD)
Magna might have a bit on it midrange again, but still tops out early, leaving the 5.0 seconds ahead.
An LS1 has 255kw (thereabouts) and whips all of the above.
The ecotechs are something like 147kw
*edit: man I need to find some figures
Not saying magnas are crap, not saying commodores are the best. I'm saying that if you firmly believe that magnas are more powerful, you're being mislead.

VTII SS 220kw HSV 250kw
VX SS 225kw HSV 255kw
VY SS 235kw HSV 255kw - 285kw
VZ SS 250kw HSV 297kw Gen 4
+ the 300kw GTS
My VY Berlina 225kw. Anyone with an auto and in most cases manual magna who says they beat a Gen III commodore are seriously dreaming, have you ever been in one?
Mines an auto and it's so much quicker than my old MANUAL TH Sports. The first night I had it there was a Manual TJ VRX with dual exhausts (friend) that I tested it against, the difference is more than you would think. Oh and Gen III commodores dont weigh much, mine weighs 1630kg with a chunky auto aswell, thats about the wieght of an optioned Verada.
Manual Magna can comfortably beat a stock 5lt Holden or Ford auto, manual ones are much quicker. A friends VN SS auto absoutly stock did a 15.2 second 400m run at willowbank in 33deg heat.
Come on all, Lets try steer away from the magnas can beat this particular model threads, and all, there are many variables in these situations, lets not take one persons word as gospel, or try to debate anothers.
Its been done enough

I used to own a vs s/c commie, and when i got the magna, i couldnt believe how fast 140kw was compared to 171!!! they standard s/c commo doesnt have much to say for itself except for more torque to pull a caravan up a hill or break the gearbox sooner( lol ). However, i have a friend who also has a vs s/c and with an after market kit on it, that thing flys off the mark, i cant keep up, but taking off from around 70-80, we are nose to nose all the way :bowrofl:
Most people really dont give the magna enough credit for what its worth, compared to a lot of other cars with a lot more power, it is a good bang for your buck. i know my te can hold itself against pretty much all non-turbo imports (skyline, silvia, 300zx, soarer i6 & v8  ) most of which are hitting the 200kw mark and rwd.
All it comes down to at the end of the day is who the driver is anyway :bowrofl: :P

  Mate I never said that I owned LS1 I don’t ,and don’t think that LS1 is a rocket car. Here is something to read from APS Engineering web .They review Ford XR6 T and compare to Holden HSV 300kw.Where here is 5L V8 185 kw Holden we can only think?. Full link : http://www.airpowersystems.com.au/falcon/motor_six_shooter_review/six_shooter2.htm “*Well, consider this: On APS’s rolling-road dyno, a stock XR6T with its claimed 240 kW makes about 195 kW at the wheels. The Falcon XR8 with an alleged 260 kW can muster only 180 kW at the wheels, which indicates Ford has a marketing problem hereabouts. But the Luxon XR6 Turbo makes a stunning 235 kW at the wheels, a big chunk better than either factory Falcon,
For comparison’s sake, the 300 kW HSV GTS gave 240 kW at the wheels on the same dyno. You do the math, but it indicates that the APS XR6 is probably making something like 295 kW at the crank.”

hahaha. u guys crack me up, i havent realy had a drag yet, and i probaly wont cause i havent realy been having good luck with the pigs latley. so this lad that works with me with his VT SS 5L manual ran a 14.3 pass and all he has is a big ass cam and one loud exhaust, and does it sound mean. on the other hand i own a TH 3.5L manual and i would have to have nuts in my head to try and drag him, simply because of the shame of loosing. can u imagine some one on a commodore forum saying that he/she lost against a magna. it simply wouldnt happen. vice versa!

I've had a race against an auto VT SS 5.0L and it was neck and neck, every time. At willowbank i've raced a fairly stock manual VS SS 5.0L and it wasnt too much in it, 14.8 to 15.1. The guy was surprised after it.
s/c 3.8's, when stock id say they would run around a mid 15 second 1/4, but with mods its very easy to get them deep into 14's.
People judge WAY too much on street races on here, they mean nothing, For example if you flog a manual 5.0L that does not mean you can generalise and say your car is quicker than all manual 5.0L's

This is probably more of an honest assesment. Remember that I am a courier, I drive the Altera on average 10 hours a day 5 days a week, I know how she handles corners of various kinds and I can make a quicker judgement call than most other drivers.
