No - well it depends on which ones you buy.

I've got a set of rola sportsbars - they clip into the window gutters - with rubber turrets - you have to make sure the roof is clean or it can leave the infamous roof rack scratch marks.

You can get others which you do screw into the roof - I wouldn't recommend this.

This is what dave_au is talking about.

Rola make them but mitsu buy them and put their stamp on, so same product.
They sit on rubber pads on the roof and get pulled to it by clips that reach down to just above the window.

PS. Get the Rhino over the Rola, their about the same price but in general the Rhino is much better quality.
