Guys,

Just went a got a few quotes for rubber for my shiny new 17X7 rims.. I was hoping you guys can shed some light on what good & whats not.

Firstly is the load rating of 95 on my TE.. did you guys consider that when you bought your rubber or did you just get lower ones? At Beaurepairs the guy actually just said he'd re-plate it.. sounded pretty dody to me.

Anyway, here is what I got just at lunch time

(all are 235/45R 17 and price is per tyre, fitted and balanced.)
I'm thinking $200 - $240 type of thing

3000A Dunlop $239 (on special, normally $279 - under load rating though)

702 Dunlop $295 - also under load rating

Hankook $200 - 97 load rating

Toyo $310 - 97 load rating

Tranpath $212 - 96 load rating

Sawa $189 - 96 load rating (sounded pretty el-cheap-o)

I think the Hankooks are the pick.. I really want to stick within the load rating for insurance.. the guy said they are silica blah blah whatever.
Only negative is they are directional, and I've been told they give alot more raod noise.

I'll add to this list each day after lunch as I get more quotes.

cheers,

-Dan

pirelli's??? they're not all they used to be.... they may look good and cost shitloads......they work fantastically on an Audi or a bemmer or a merc, but they're rear wheel/ allwheel drive and the tyres are therefore made for rear wheel/AWD. theyre simply not suited for front wheel drive magna's

anyways, i've heard that federal tyres arent too bad (for what you pay)
i've got kumho's at the mo' cant complain.
also look at dunlop (volleys...hehehhe  )

Federal Tyres.

I have em, 225/50/16 -- and they are really top-shit tyres.

them some big load ratings... mine are 94 and the last were 95... (which is what the tyre plaque wants....
i have hankooks but not the ones your getting... the seem pretty good, and they road noise is not bad.... the wind noise is worse!

I just put some Yokohama A539's on my car (215/60 16's) and so far I have no complaints. Cost me $154 per tyre. They came 3rd or 4th in a recent Wheels tyre review, but they were using a BA XR6-T for the test and as someone else said tyres perform differently on different vehicles. The wheels review was on the 235/45 17's

HAve you looked at Flaken Rubbers as well?

They are in that price range = either the GBK 451's or the STI115's.

Stay out of Dunlops!
I've been using Falken A 326 (I think I remember correctly the exact model  )
My friend Slayer uses Marshalls, which are USA version of Kumho. Both are ZR rated (240+ km/h) and withstand required weights. Pricing around 200 bux for that size 235/45/17.
We have found them to be very good in dry and reasonable in wet - it's quite wide, remember.
Road noise is audiable but not too loud. Gets covered by the XForce dump anyway.
For that price range they are one of the best selections.
Hope this helps

I read somewhere that because the later models were plated as having
94 load rating, you can go to mitsu and get the TE's replated to 94. Then
you can have 94 load rating tyres.

wtf?? ive got dunlops and they work brilliantly! this is my second set of dunlops and id have no problems going back to them!

Dunlop FM901 235/45/17
and
Dunlop ST001 235/45/17

both have been as good as eachother!!! i love the design of the FM series, but i do think the ST series is a better tyre! (more expensive at that too :O)

the FM901's are bout 310 a corner, and the ST001's set me back bout 335 a corner

Guys,

Thanks for all the replys.. I appreciate it.

When you are saying which rubber you have can you please also list a price.. this really is a price based thing for me.

Booya: You have Dunlops, does that mean you don't have the 95 load rating?

Fysh: same thing for your Bridgestones?

Dingo: so you rekon if I go the directional Hankooks the road noise will not be a problem? I really like how quiet my TE is and I wouldn't want to make it any louder. I wonder if I can get similar Hankooks that are non-directional?

I have Kuhmo 712's they are great, have a bit of noise but that is what you expect from any high porformance tyre, they were $180 a tyre for 235/45/17. I wanted Kuhmo MX's but the stupid tyremaster who are the importers aren't going to bring them into the country, these things from all test stick like poo on a shoe and are so close to haveing type "R" rubber that is road legal. bummer.

Not suited for FWD? Turning is turning, accelerating is accelerating.
Nevermind the fact that the Ralliart Magna comes with Pirelli P6000s
BTW, most Audis on the road are FWD.

i have directional bridgestone grid 2s which came with the car when we bought it and are still on there no idea on the cost. i wouldnt even know if bridgestone stores would sell them cheaper but id like to know if you find out.

They seem to stick nicely , ive had to pull up in a REAL hurry twice with them and i think i could have even pushed them harder.

Yeea, maybe if u wanna spend some 300 bux on them, but as u saw, the budget was restricetd to ~ 200.
Bridges and Dunlops on this price range are possibly the crappiest tyres on the market, after Bob's All Rounders.
Trust me, been driving around long enough... 8)

O/T : Sweet - I didn't know there was a Ralliart on the cruise.. hope he makes it to the national meet.

anyway,

I just went a got a quote for 235/45R17 Simex rubber (load rating 95) these are non-directional and $195.. sounds like a good tyre. The guy was saying they are 'harder-wearing' so they hold up a bit better to rough treatment.

It's definately down to the Hankook's and the Simex at this stage.
A guy at this tyre place drives on the Hankook's and he said you can't hear the difference at all.. hmm.

I'll go to a few more places on Saturday then get 'em fitted sometime next week.

Thanks for all the help. Any more suggestions welcomed.

And what price range were they?

Get Dunlop Le Mans A 4's and you're lauughing all the way - until you hit something cos u just lost it big time.
But these Dunlpos were cheapish, below 200

Just got some mate-of-mate's rates:
(again 235/45R17's with above 95 load rating)
prices are fitted and balanced.

Simex $179 ($16 better than previous best)

Toyo $205 ($10 better than previous best)

The guy said the Simex are a perfectly good tyre.
He also said the Toyo are an excellent tyre.

I think the Toyo's just hit the lead.. more quotes tomorrow.

Yesterday I bought the Toyo 235/45 R17 Load Raiting 97 for $205ea.

Only driven about 30kms on them, but I can definately notice they are there.

Road noise is a litte louder than it used to be.. nothing to be disapointed about. Also the ride is a little harsher. Going over potholes/manholes is definately rougher now that it was with the stock 15's. - again, nothing to be too worried about.

All in all, 100% satisfaction, they look awesome!
I'm getting pics this weekend.

Thanks for all the suggestions

i've heard good things about the Toyo's.... not sure how they stack up against anything else yet as havent tried them.... but they come with a good rep from OS.... and that sounds relatively cheap.. good job!

Alwaay's make sure the tyre you stick on is the same load index or if you have a accident your insurance will say bye bye. TJ's a re rated at 94 with a 17" rim or 670kg, if you tyre is under this you don't have insurance
