View Full Version : Dual Exhuast Noise

Ive been reading through the piles and piles of exhuast posts :doubt: and while I think ive got a good idea of the theory now, im still wondering, which is louder a dual exhaust system, or single?

In theory if you split the exhaust at the rear axle and feed it into two mufflers wouldnt each muffler have half the flow, and so be quiter??

I did have a Redback system on a TE manual and it sounded very nice, but it droned a little. Now looking at a KH Verada, so this little drone which I didn't mind before will be louder due to the Auto sitting me at lower revs, and the slightly bigger engine.

Has anyone had any experience in making a drone-less dual exhaust system? perhaps dual redback mufflers?

Thanks

It's not the flow that makes an exhaust loud, its the propagation of the sound waves and the effect the pipes and muffler/s have on it. The fact that there its two mufflers is because there is twice as many pipes to muffle.

Seems there's little that can be done about the 2000rpm drone in autos, most autos tend to drone anyway but there are systems with resonant frequencies that won't reproduce this sound to the same extent that others do, and most of the time they involves everything from the headers back. Magnaflow and lukey make some that people seem to go for to get over the auto drone. Anthony from phillcom performance knows his bit. There were a few posts in his section asking about this... getting better sound without drone.

A few members have full twin systems... For exhaust note, I recon this'd be the go, but the muffler and tip is always the deciding factor. The cannons drone really bad because they have a big tip. Big tips aren't bad, usually they're loud, but they will only sound good if you have a clear note getting to them. I.e. flowed headers, cat (prefferably not at all), 2.5-3" through to the muffler.

Cheers,

Danno

The tips have nothing to do with sound, it's the mufflers and I think back pressure that decide that. Cannon have big area in them so the noise is amplified, and ****ed up.
Pex mufflers sound quite nice on magnas and Berklee. Give BLKMAG a message I reckon his system sounds better than any other magna system I've ever hered. It sounds good in the audio file, but when u hear it in real life, on a quiet road it's ****ing unblievable. Oh it's only a 2.5" Single system. Extractors are what make them screem, just an exhaust give's that lower note I've noticed.

I can relate to this question. About 6 months ago I got installed 2 twin exhaust magna flow mufflers with the whole instalalion from the extractors to the 2 resonators anf the 3 " tubing. I can say that u do not need a straight thru muffler to gain more horsepower. This method I have I am able to reach about 130db at 3500rpm.
P.S Twin will always beat a single

so you say you DONT need a straight thru muffler? are you on drugs?

It more depends on the type of muffler you use, mine dual system was very quiet, then I took out the first muffler for straight pipe to get a bit more sound out of it, much better, but it does'nt drone like my single straight through on my old auto.
I have two lukey mufflers though, might be the difference, but I love it, my friends constantly comment on the note and how awesome it is.

best way to get noise hust chops off your exhaust system from near the egine and u'll sound like a rotor.

gr8 candidate to perform the old no exhaust on a commo practice. you do know you will lose substantial power by doing that.
read the thread in the magna mods section about Back pressure myth.

Hmm ok, so from what i can gather, the dual exhausts tend to drone less and sound louder??? I like this.

Fre5sh what exhaust system r u running. Dual, but with what mufflers. I think im allmost sold on perhaps dual Lukey's or REdbacks, im thinking the Lukey's cause they apparently drone less?

Heydude, what mufflers did you use since your is an auto and all is dronless?

DAMMM THE AUTO DRONE........

cyato clarify things lukey and red back are just brands ur paying for the name so dont be fooled im running a 2.5" cat back system into a 2" collector to twin 2" pipes
running dual Zetti DTM style mufflers. Zetti is the new and one of the leading muffler sellers recently introduced to Oz i highly recommend the use of a zetti muffler they are very effective and come ina hole range of styles.

Sweet, looks like either the lukey or the Zetti perhaps.

Thanks for sending me the audio clip of your exhuast Fre5sh :D, do agree, sounds pretty sweet.

Hopefully with a bit of luck should be quiet below 2,000 RPM and then start to roar above 3,000 . The perfect exahuast quiet for cruising but roars when u want it.

Picking up the new car Tommorow :D so new exhaust next week some time.

Thanks
