Hey guys, I have a problem with my car stereo...

The problem is as follows:
I can be listening to a cd and say 4 or 5 songs into the cd all the songs go crackling etc and skipping in and out.... u skip further into cd and songs refuse to start etc. But you can go back to the start and first couple can sound fine ?

This happens with burnt and non burnt cds which have all tested fine on other devices.

This doesnt ALWAYS happen, a fix is sometimes to remove cd, and face of cd player then turn car off.. leave for say 20mins then it MAY work normal again.. it seems real moody?

Sometimes I can play a whole cd fine, and all songs are fine.. but other times it stuffs up...

Same happens with mp3 discs I put in..cept I get a lot further into the songs before it happens...

Normally occurs on possibly longer trips? SO basically if i turn car on normally I can skip into cd fine and play some of the songs at end of the disc... and it will play no problem, but other times it plays up.

As you can imagine.. this is REALLY annoying, having to always stop listening to cds n put up with the crappy radio... its even worse on long drives... where say ur in car dreiving for 4 hours and it happens.. there is no radio available so I have to have no tunes.. or put up with the first couple songs of a cd even if they dont play up.

ANY help would be greatly appreciated, this is really a hugely annoying thing for me.. so yeh, I was usnure whether this was a cd player problem? or lose cord? or what exactly...

And if cd is crackling I can switch to radio and it works fine?

So yeh... anyone with any ideas?

I've heard something similiar to this before. From memory, I think the deck was getting too hot. Once you let it cool down by listening to the radio, it would be fine until it got hot again.

If the issue is overheating you can mount a small fan to the top of the unit or even a smaller one to the back of the heatsink. It sounds kind of silly but can be done if you really like the deck in question and want to keep it.

This isn't uncommon behaviour with (badly) burned disks but it is unusual with stock CDs. Could be your head servo is breaking down. Could be a dirty lens I suppose - have you tried one of those cleaning CDs - the kind with the miniature lens brushes on them? Ask at your usual music shop.

Mitsa-Jerk, your Problems sounds more like a Wire Shorting out then a Deck related problem as you said it only occurs on extreme cornering..

Badseed what deck is it ?? is it the Factory one??

Its a Sony CD/mp3 one

The overheating I guess is a possible cause will have to look into it... but even if sometimes I have had car turned off then turn back on the problem MIGHT still occur..

If your deck is over 12 months old it is possible it could have a laser alignment issues.

I have a bad feeling on this one... My friend had a Sony Deck and it was prone to heat problems.. The Heat sink was in a bad postion so no matter how you installed the deck it would never get enough cold air..

We replaced it with a Clarion deck and have had no worries since..

Well age of deck, it was happening when I first had it in installed.... So guess I will have to look into the heat issues side of things...

But the reason i dont think its heat.. is that the end songs on a cd stasrt stuffing up etc.. then i can skip to the first song and it plays perfectly fine?

Well the end songs are on the outside (CDs play from the middle out AFAIK), which is away from the 'park' position of the heads. So could be dirt on the head moving mechanism or it could have something to do with the servo motor needing to speed down the disk as the outer edges come into play (outer edge = larger circles = need to speed down the spin rate). Unless of course you somehow have bad scratches or thick fingerprints only on the outside edges of your Cds.

If its dirt maybe it can be cleaned but if the servo motor is going.... time to chuck I'd think.
