I have a 98 TF magna,

The engine seems to run smooth but when I turn aircon on and go to the outside and listen, It makes a noise (fan type of noise like when your in the car)

The noise go's on for about 5secs then back to engine noise then after 10secs, back to fan type of noise.

Any one have any ideas? or is this normal?

its called a thermo fan. the fan activates when the engine gets to a certain temperature to cool it down. when you have the air con on you are working the engine harder and the fan will most likely come on more frequently

One of those strange things the car manufactors do.When you press your air con on both thermo fans kick in, even if the engine has not reached temperture. So every time your compressor cuts in, on comes the thermo fans regardless of speed and engine tempertures.

ok, so this isnt a problem besides extra noise?

Have you noticed that the 98 TF draws a heap of power when the AC is on?

If I'm diving home on a 100Kph stretch and have cruse and AC on you can feel quiet noticeably the draw of the compressor going on off.

Yeah just brought the car yesterday and I notice aircon noises when you on the outside only, havent been passed 100km/h yet :/ just 85 so far.

omg! it isnt the aircon makeing the noise...

its all the engine, my mum tells me to turn off aircon and we listent the noise, my mum plays with my electric mirror and then the sound comes on and off.. so it isnt the aircon..

Heres my testing, Mums car turn on fan to 1 mark level, Makes the same sound as my car but except mine is a bit lounder.

Somereason my car is always turning fan on and off, like the car overheats then 10sec-20 sec later cuts off and back to normal engine noise then a 10-20sec later makes a fan noise again.

(I used term "overheat" because I think read somewhere it says something about car knows when its getting hot engine and turns on fan to cool itself or a tempeture sensor thing, something like that"

the thermo fan still oprates even with the aircon off! get it checked out for peice of mind

yeah if you leave the car to idle at running temp while stationary the fan will cycle on and off - when you take off and drive around the block for a few mins the air passing thru the grille cools it down so when you pull back up the fan shouldnt start to cycle again for a few minutes.. the fan will immidiately start to cycle if you switch on the aircon cos it generates more heat because the engine is under more load with the compressor..

Yeah, the car engine is fine normal sounding noise but when the aircon is on, it kinda makes a noise that is louder then engine noise when u just start car. Kinda like a fridge defrosting if you have a auto defrosting fridge.

i wonder why car manufacturers do that...i dont think its the most power efficient thing to do....Like when its a really hot day right, turn the car and then the a/c on, the fan cuts in straight away...But the engine isnt even hot yet. I know some other cars, the fan actually rises with the engine, like for example on a hot day you might hear a Mercedes or a BMW making a "roaring" sound when it drives by, simply because the fan is moving in rhythm with engine rise and decent. It simply means that its on when its needed and off when its not needed.

hmmm and wouldnt the heat from the aircon need to be exuasted somehow??

You know the whole process of how the aircon works with one part being cold the other Hot.... well wouldnt the fans be cooling that as well!

Anyway yes when your stationary for a while (most cars are made to be driven) of course the fans are gonna kick in!!

it was a cold night and rainin and i was talking to my friend out the front of her house with my high beems and engine idling....

Every few minutes the fan would kick in.. and as for the power draw the lights would for a moment flicker (go a bit dim) as the fans kick in...

hmmm unnessasary power draw?...

General Rule of HP loss with aircon is 8Kws..

I'll let you know the results coz I have an appointment with the dyno...

8kw thats a lot i must remember to turn aircon off when burning off

does anywone know how effective the econo mode on vrx climate control would be then ?

Guys, Guys, Guys (and any gals listening too!),

Calm down! 8)

The airconditioning cycles on and off, otherwise you would absolutely freeze your butt off in the car. Just the same as in your house if you have a/c. The airconditioning process is a refrigerant gas in a high pressure, it flows around the system, cooling the inside of the car, then having to get rid of the heat it picked up inside, and cool it off outside. Your car has two "radiators", one for the engine water, and one for the a/c refrigerant, and that one is usually at the front. When the a/c is on, the radiator needs air to pass over it to cool the refrigerant, so it runs the thermofan (big noisy fan). So if your car is moving or not, the fan will cut in. You will also notice that your temp gauge will reach operating temperature much faster with the a/c on, as there is hot air being passed over your water radiator as well as the engine, as well as being more load on the engine.

Hope this helps.
