I was thinking about advancing my timing 3 - 5 degrees would this create problems, has anyone done this on their 3rd gen and if so what has the performance gain been.

Cheers Brett:cool:

uhmm yeas you can, me and my dad did this. My TL is adjusted at 3deg forward then stock, and it's fine, that is the most that i can do it becaust it starts to ping. My dad has an osyloscope attached to a meter that is bolted to the car engine, the sensor that is. You run the car and the osiloscope sourghts out what is standard noise and levels itself out. You then advance the timing and if detonation/pinging occurs it shows up. 3 deg wiht normal fuel is all you can do.

Simply undo the two nuts for the distributor and turn. Same as normal cars with a distributor. This can't be done on cars with a coil over plug arraingment, need a computer for that.
As to power gains well, migtymag you drove my car you should know. But i think in 5KW range

Checking for pinging at idle with an ociliscope wont help you determine whether your car will detonate. Your car is most likely to ping at low revs and high load which unless you have the ociliscope in your passenger seat and the wire running around your window and into your engine bay you can't simulate, without a dyno.

So while your car may be fine at idle can you be sure it isnt pinging while your driving around, especially as summer comes and the heat worsenes the situation. On the flip side run premium and you should be fine over summer.

Having said that though, good work if it isn't pinging as advance is one of the best things you can do for your car(to a point) as it helps power and efficiency - top work :thumb:

Apparently mine was advanced by 4deg when they tuned the emanage - I always run 98ron.

Guy that tuned it said he advanced to 6deg - but 4 got a better result apparently.

I Agree it is not the most appropriate way of doing this but it's all i had to work with. I am basicaly making the assumption that at idel the engine is not pinging so much that it's a problem, if you know what i mean.

So far no problems, the car seems fine an i have had it this way for about 3 months now.

I wasnt trying to have a go at you, I think it's great that you got in there and gave it a go :P, just trying to give other people the warning that unless you have some idea what your doing you could end up going backwards/costing yourself some money.

I mean you look at anyone who mucks around with modified v8's, they pretty much all do it by the seat of their pants, it just takes a bit of understanding of the engine to avoid going to far.
