View Full Version : engines swapped
hey guys, after i got a quote from a mechanic on swapping engines between 2 magna tr's both 4 cyl one is auto and one is manual...i decided to go out an do it my self and so far its been a success i have one engine in and i left one out on purpose because i plan to work the internals abit after loosing the timing chain dropped down into the sump or somethin, but neway i was told that you can replace the chain by just linkin a new chain to the old one and feeding it down, i tried that haha its not possible if so i want to know who has done it this way? yeh anyway im going to re time it change seals and bearings etc...all that internal foshaz....and ive never done this before either, but i got a mate who is guyding me along the way hes a mechanic, id be stuffed without him lol, before if goes in i will spray the head and a few other parts on it just to give it a little look when i pop the bonnet, im not shure on what colours to chose, my car is white i was thinkin a white head, or red..and a few other white items painted under the hood...?

Punctuation mate, make paragraphs! That was really hard to read.
Glad to hear the swap was a success...couldn't imagine it being too hard.
Just completely clean the engine bay initially and see how it looks.

I have used the method you mention to swap the camshaft drive chain. THIS IS A 2 MAN JOB, one person at the cam sprocket feeding the chain onto the teeth while holding both ends of the chain firmly against the sprocket to keep the cam in time and a second person under the car turning the harmonic balance BACKWARDS (to keep load on the chain tensioner).
If you do replace the chain this way be careful not to mess up the cam timing or worse, drop the chain :belt: . (the cam will jump around driven by the valve springs and try to skip teeth)
There is also chain guides and a second oil pump chain that can't be replaced without removing the timing case. (one guide on the pump/balancer chain is adjustable through the timing case, but it is not supposed to be adjusted on a TR)
The oil pump chain is often the noisy one.

I've done this job several times on Sigmas, and believe me, when the chains get sloppy enough to rattle, both need replacing plus the chain guides.I'm going to need to do this job on a TP soon - I'm going to lift the engine and tilt it enough to be able to get the timing chain case off without removing the gearbox or head. Backing off the sump bolts and being careful to not damage the head gasket when the timing case comes off is supposed to work.... anyone tried doing this?
