hello
Can anyone tell me why it is illegal to have rims over 19" on a sedan and why is it illegal to have your car very low off the ground.

Ride Height
If you impact with a Pedestrian having a low ride height can make the Pedestrian shoot over the Bonnet and through the Glass.. Even at very slow speeds, also makes your car more prone to getting Airborne if you hit a Rock at high speed.
There are many reasons but these are the only ones I am aware of...
The Tyre size has something to do with the turning ability of your Vehicle and throws out the Speedo...

About the rim size... I heard that the only legal size you can have up to is 2 sizes greater than that stated on the stamped compliance plate. So if you had 15" you can only go up to 17" etc... I am sure it has to do with design safety... the car is tested under certain conditions... but not for all configurations... if you choose to go outside of the acceptable range, you could be comprimising the safety of your vehicle. I guess they have to set acceptable limits.

not sure why 19", but legally you are only allowed to go 2inches larger in rim diameter than factory, as any bigger and you will start getting clearance, speedo etc problems.
So if your car is factory 15", max you can have is 17".

But what if your car had an option for larger rims?
I.e. you could get the 15" steelies with hub caps, or the 16" alloys?
Would it be 2" up from what you got, or what was availible as an option?

I have a tJ magna and at the moment I have 19" and in a month or so I would like to get 20's or 21's. To me I belive car manafactures should invent something that no matter how big the rims are the speedo will calibrate itself.

I believe there is more to it than the speedo calibration.

Best bet is to find out off your insurance company mate.
Rim size is abit of a grey area.
Some people say no bigger then 2" from what the car orriginally had on it, some say 2" from the base model of that type of car, some same 2" from the smallest rims on the tire placard.........

You can put 20" rims if you want, you just have to get an engeering certificate.

Car isnt allowed to be too low as if you have a flat tyre your undercarriage will scrape.
Cars arent allowed to be overly modified as they have to pass safety checks. Modifiying the cars from original spec causes these to stray.
Anything can be engineered at a cost though.

hello
Hi.
Can anyone tell me why it is illegal to have rims over 19" on a sedan and why is it illegal to have your car very low off the ground.
Because them's the rules.
I have a tJ magna and at the moment I have 19" and in a month or so I would like to get 20's or 21's. To me I belive car manafactures should invent something that no matter how big the rims are the speedo will calibrate itself.
Well, unless you have a VR-X or Ralliart, then those 19's are illegal. Regardless of model of Magna you have, 20's or 21's will be illegal. I'm unsure about the details of engineering certificates.
Here's a reason why they try to limit increased size. Tyre ratios can be selected to maintain speedo accuracy but you get to a point where the tyre technology can't compensate for a lack of structural depth in the tyre profile. Cars have a load rating specified by the factory that nominate a numbering system which equates to a kg mass per wheel. You are required to have a tyre fitted which meets or exceeds this number. Generally speaking, the lower the profile, the lower rating. Try getting 225/50R17's which meet the 95 rating that most 3rd gens have on them. Good luck, there's only one tyre I've seen available.

bigger tyres or rims = less braking power

if you were to upgrade the brakes and the tyres didnt hit anything lock to lock theres no reason it couldnt be approved with a mod plate...
did you know that its againsted the law to put low profile mags on utes eg rodeo falcon hilux commodore ect unless they have a load rating

pretty sure that would only apply to 1Tonne carrier vehicles

Check with your states motor authority as to the legalities regarding rim size and vehicle height.

I've upgraded my TF from 15" to 18" but i also upgraded the tyre load index to 95. The previous 15" tyre was only rated at 94. While we're on the topic, anyone here insured with RACV and have 18" wheels on? Just wanna know if RACV gave you any drama. If they do with me, guess i'll just have to move my business elsewhere. Gonna call them tomorrow.

yeah mate 17/7 or 7.5 is the max they will allow.

Well your wheel selection could put you in trouble. Have a look at your tyre placard. There were a batch of early 3rd gens which came out with a 94 but I thought that they were TE's.

Just get them engineered then its legal, or you can be lucky enough to own a car like mine with a complience plate that states that the car was engineered from factory. I must thank the boys from mitsu adelaide for pointing that one out to me

Does this allow you to mod anything else and still be legal? :D
Where is your plate located?

you just need to update the 'certificate' if you can call it that, and its the same compliance plate as every other magna, just has some additional printing on it.

My mate got 18"s on his 3.8L VT, and he actually had a few problems with the traction control on the car.
That is, the car grips like Rosie O Donnel to a donut and won't give even a shmidget of spin.
:bowrofl:
So I don't know if thats a 'problem', but hey, we all like to have a bit of wheel spin here and there.

I bet ur mates car is a auto..?? he cant pull a burnout and its got nothing to do with his 18`s.. they are desighed not to bwe able to have both the stop and go pedals pressed at the same time.. the traction control is just ur mates excuse cause he cant do them.. There is also a button on the console that turns traction control off..

I had a VT commo when they were new and I'll tell you they did easy donuts and smoked up pretty good. The old heel/toe works well on commo 5 speeds.
FROGi: As Ego says turn traction control OFF.

Yeah it's a manual, and quite happily shredded them before. Without knowing any better, I just believed my mate dribbling on about his traction control. Actually because there is no swith on the dash whatsoever, that'd indicate to me he doesnt even have traction control.
What I'm talking about though is on the move, you know, dropping back a cog and fish tailing, there's none of this happenning with the 18's. Hahaha I'll justy blame it on the ****ty 3.8L
