I pulled up at a set of lights this afternoon in a middle lane between a new Ford FPV GT and an SS Commodore. Both drivers looked over at my 380GT and then floored it when the lights changed. I was so tempted to join in but accelerated normally... it seemed the right thing to do in the main street in Canberra. It turned out that just behind me was a motorcycle cop who overtook me and pulled over both drivers. I laughed so hard when I passed them 200m up the road. Boy those FPV GTs can go!

i opened this up to see a cool thread about lining up 3 6 cylinder vehicles..
Only 1 of em was a 6 and was too scared to have a run with the big powerplants of a GT and SS..
Bad luck the other 2 got pulled over.. hahaha
So all in all, there was no showdown at all..

Thats it... Thats what we need to do.. Get Top Gear to compare the 380Gt with the XR6 and S-pac and V6-Camry Sportivo and see who comes out the Best..
I would love to see a 380 in full song !!!

That would be pretty cool.
A family sedan 6 cylinder shootout. Problem is, some of the magazines are a little too biased towards certain companies. So youd need maybe an overseas Magazine or show to do it.

I think that's why he suggested Topgear. Being a British show that clasifies as "overseas".

Recently I was driving the 180kW 380 VRX Auto along a long windy coastal stretch of road when a new V6 Honda Accord tried to give me a hurry along..... so down went the pedal in the 380 and I have to say the 380 WAY outperformed the Accord, the handling in the 380 is exceptional.
On the hill sections that had lots of corners in it I was just loving the growl of the engine and the exhaust note, I had power to burn, it is clear the 380 has a wide wheel base by the way in which you can throw it at corners and drive it right through the apex.
The bit that kinda frustrates me is how it 'flat shifts', it wont change gear when it is reving hard out, and there is kinda a wee flat spot on changing. Its situations like this when you discover the steering whell is a bit on the thin side, it could do with being a bit chunkier for better grip.
all in all...... goooood bye Honda!.... :D

What do you mean I didn't give em a go. Technically I passed both of em at the 200m mark. The precedence has been set, the 380 outperforms both the SS and FPV. The involvement of local police was appreciated but unlikely to be a factor in the experiment.

I agree with VR4BOYs comments about the gear shift. I think the problem is with the computer trying to work out how best to rev the engine efficiently. The trick is to drop it into "sports mode" sequential shift and then go nuts. The sports mode seems to be a technical term for "may God have mercy."
When I first got the vehicle I likened the "delay" to that of flying a jet. If you apply throttle on a jet it can take several seconds for the thrust to kick in. You often overcompensate by applying too much throttle in the few seconds pause only to be met by far more thrust than you were after. Anyway... that is how I related to it. Far more power than you "need" but sometimes you have to wait for it. You plant your foot to be briefly disappointed only to have the frown wiped off your face by the G-forces! Very cool!
Please forgive my analogy.. it is unlikely to be appropriate.

shoulda got a manual :P
yes i know you cant get manual GT's (even though its supposed to the sports/luxury model). Anyways, i hope the tippy in it is better than the TW.

So you're comparing the sportier suspension setup on the 380VRX to the V6 luxury accord...

Well speeds weren't mentioned, so we can only speculate.

Yep, I'd call that a win :D
Good work. Bet the copper has $$$$ signs flasing in his eyes when he pulled up behind that lineup waiting for the green.
Which all goes to prove...... Dragging other cars at the lights is illegal....
...so make sure you check for cops behind you! :bowrofl:

Very strange, there was a FPV Falcon and R8 going down the warrego highway on wednesday, darting through the traffic, funny thing was it did'nt look to me like they where racing each other, it looked like they where trying to intice other drivers, maybe coppers in disguise seting up the big sting on hoons, nothing would surprise me these days.
And no I did'nt give it a go, was in the daewoo lanos,,,,,,

You would expect someone in a $70k SS/FPV power house to be speeding at the first opportunity. Around here next to everyone seems to go 20km over the limit as the "done thing". I get beeped at doing the speed limit in the left hand bloody lane. I guess there must be a lot less police in Canberra than there should be.
Coming back from NSW last weekend I was passed by a P plater in a Toyota Echo doing a good 150kms/hr in an 80 zone. She had 4 friends packed into that little car and I could almost see the newspaper headline showing a crumpled wreck and stating "4 youths die in horrific crash". As it happened I caught up to her at a set of lights only to have her pass me again when the little Echo struggled up to 80 and then kept going.
I don't mind giving it herbs now and then but it has to be within limits. Perhaps I am just getting old and sensible now that I drive an "old mans" car?

It's just being a safe, responsible driver mate. I'm the same. There's no point in endangering the lives of others. Having said that i'm no saint either. I like to give it a blat every now n then.

I can agree on using Excessive Acceleration just not excessive speeds..
I mean a Burnout is less likely to cause injury to anyone other then the Idiot doing it but speed can wipe out innocent people...

i knew it would happen.....as soon as i say something like that i have a race. Today going to my exam, mini cooper s surprises me by gunning it from the lights. he got the jump by taking off first, but he pulled away slightly and i was only catching slowly by end of 2nd, then we backed off. I've raced one at the drags and beaten it pretty easy top end....
Those s/c mini's can scream off the mark!

i will be the first to put my hand up and say i use exessive speed and acceleration (as best teh car will allow) however, i have made various mods that improve the car to do so, as has everyone else here i think, better shocks and wider tires, i cruise at 140 down the highway, i have a darwin license so im not worried about loosing points, and i work for the govt so i dont care about the fines, however, to do 150 in an echo with 4 friends in teh car on you p plates is inviting disaster on a gargantuan scale,to many kids are doing this and making me pay more for insurance cause they cant drive, however, nothing gives me greater joy than betting said p plater in anycare at teh lights. and as far as illegal racing goes at teh lights, i had my new exahaust fitted 5 minutes before i had people queing up at the lights, i cant go to the shops without somone trying to race me, even a little excel tried it yesterday. anyways race safe, and speed only on the highways, and its only illegal if you get caught :D

Those Cooper Mini S's go like rockets all right! I had one try and drag me off at the lights the other day too. We were entering a 100 zone so I felt obliged to gun my 380 too. Whilst I wasn't foot-to-the-floor I wasn't conserving fuel with my take off either. The little mini was easily capable of keeping up with me. The 19 year old P plater in the driving seat had a smile a mile wide and I can understand why. Mind you, those Coopers are probably about as expensive as my 380GT anyway.
After complaining about reckless drivers I got my first speeding ticket in my new car yesterday. At $130 for a 69 in a 60 zone I think I will be driving a little slower in future. I just discovered I have cruise control so it may be of some use in reducing fines.
