View Full Version : Auto Transmission BANG when put into Drive - TR 2.6EFI

Hello,
Some months ago when performing a 3 point turn I too hastily set the automatic transmission from reverse into drive, normally I am mindful of this and allow it to stay in neutral for a moment before going from drive to reverse or vice versa. Now when going into drive I 'enjoy' a great bang and the car leaps forward, which of cource worries me. The bang is less pronounced when going into drive at lower rpms which is logical I guess. Going into reverse is smooth and quiet though. I tried going to 1st gear first then moving up to drive, my poor hopes were verified and this made no difference. Any ideas? I thank you for your time.

Does this mean you change into drive while in anything BUT idle?? Is the car driving OK?

If you change into D while the revs are up, you may have damaged some internals of the drive train. Though i used to get this, try getting the car serviced, maybe an auto service while you're there, could be sometihng as simple as old oil.

Diff problem. My old ks did that and I ignored it until it rooted the transmission.

Hi,
It recently had a filter and auto-tran oil change, although I used the Castrol brand for TR magna's instead of genuine Mitsubishi. I noticed this oil is thinner than the Mitsu tranny oil at room temperature anyway, but appears to give better performance when the engine is cold. Faulty diff...Does a front wheel drive have a diff aswell?...is this diff located in the auto-transmission? I get the bang and the brief leap forward when I put into Drive from any position, this happened after one day I too quickly went from reverse to drive when doing a 3 point turn. These magna auto-transmissions are weak I am told which is why prior to this, I was usually mindful to leave it in neutral for a moment between changing R-D or vice versa. Do you think this (thinner) Castrol tranny oil was the cause of all this? Otherwise, it drives very good and has served me well in the 20,000kms I done with it and has not needed much done to it; although I service it myself regularly. It has 206,500km on the clock so far.

Thank you for your replies,
Rauli

Yep, they sure do have a diff. Its an open type integrated into the auto trans. The thinner oil may
not have provided enough lubrication. Try the following to see it it still shudders. Before shifting out
of P, depress the brake fully, I mean to the floor and then shift.

transmission service and oil change prolong the life and effectiveness of the transmission, although the experts say a trans that has done over 200,000KMs is on borrowed time

check your engine mounts my tr does this and both front and rear mounts are shaged

Hi,
I tried this, it just bangs and leaps forward then bounces back a bit. I depressed the brake until my foot hurt and I tried this 3 times, same result but I dont feel any shudder or vibration, when doing the same for reverse there is very little to complain about. It sort of feels like the clutch discs or whatever it has are really close and when engaging have very little distance to move thus less time to run into place, but then again I do not know how auto transmissions work. It was idling at about 1000rpm which is what it normally is at, although i understand 750-850 is the norm. Dodgy wax pellet in that choke thing you think? If I get the car moving and then engage Drive from idle the bang can be most times be eliminated if not substantially reduced, I guess this is because the other disc or whatever it engages with is already rotating thus resulting in less resistance when coming into contact. I fear I'm in for an auto-transmission rebuilt, thats about $1700 right?

Thank you,
Rauli

Mine makes a clunk noise when taking off mainly first thing in the morning or when it's cold out side, which is odd when the trans was replaced a few years ago...

Maybe engine mounts? I realised thanks to suggestions in this forum and elsewhere the problem was engine mounts which i just replaced, or 3 of them anyway.
