View Full Version : Tyre Size Choice/Concern

ok .. i know, ive searched through the many threads along here looking as to what tyres i should get for my new 17x7" rims. All that i could gather was everyone had a different opinion .. bridgestone for that bloke, pirelli's for this bloke .. and i am completely confused at what i want/need to get (first time buying tyres).
but before ya think this is another "choose me a tyre" thread, one thing that concerned me is that the tyre places highly recommend and INSIST on 235/45's and ive read (on here) that the max for 7" inch wide rims is 225/50 .. which is what two of my wheels have on at the moment (Bridgestone Grid II, the other sets are bald, hence new tyres). Problem is, despite the legality of them .. they can be a good $50 cheaper for the same tyre
so im just seeing how many of yous run 235/45 on 17x7" rims ?? and is it really worth saving the extra dollars for it?
but to keep with the trend .. i may as well ask what tyre recommendations you guys have. Being a uni student, i dont wanna sacrifice an arm and a leg, just so that i can drive. I got quoted Bridgestone Grid III's for $239 for the 235/45, but $275 for the 225/50's. And i also see that each place seem to promote a different brand ..
Tyrepower wanted to seel me Toyo's for $189
Ian Diffen wanted to sell me Hankook's (Ventus HRII H405) for $179
Bob Jane has Fulda Excelero for $199
i am just really lost with what to choose ...

feds are only 180$ each at bobjane 22//50/17
I've a similar dilemma at the moment. I'm not sure wether to go 235s or 225s because of insurance.
When I asked AAMI they said I have to find out myself what width is supposed to fit on.
My mechanic uses TyrePower for tyres and said he could get me Toyos for about 152 each.
Those who have gone from 225s to 235s have you noticed a difference in traction?
(ps sorry to kinda hijack your thread esemte :shifty: )

225/50R17's are what came out on the ralliarts.. Pirelli P6000's.. and they are close to $450 each tyre..
i ended up getting Nexens (absolute rubbish) for $220 a tyre... they are noisy as hell, whine like a b!tch.. and are showing noticable wear after only 3000kms.. once these wear out ill be lookin at either getting (better) more expensive 225/50R17's or upgrading to 18's..
If the ralliarts came out with 225/50R17's does that mean that thats all your allowed to put on them (legally)? or can you put on say 235/45R17s or whatever.. becuase $450 for each tyres is rediculous.. have been recommended Eagle Goodyears by seafood.. so i might give them a try..
as for getting either 225/50R17's or 235/45R17's.. the cheap 225's are CRAP and about $200 each tyre.. have also been told that there isnt a great deal to choose from in that size.. soif ya can.. go 235's.. probably cheaper

 Wow! My rear tires are pirelli P6000s (15" only). Didn't realise they were that expensive... shame they're nearly worn out.

the widest tyre u can put on a 7" rim is a 225. I had this problem not long ago when i put rims on my car. I had a 7" rim and the tyre place put on a 235 tyre. I only realised 3 months later that this was illegal so i went back and asked them about it and they said they thought they had put a 7.5" rim on. They agreed with me that it is illegal to have a 235 tyre in a 7" rim and so they changed my tyres and my rims for me.
someone will point u in the direction of a website that has a guide as to what is legal and what is not.

WTF Pirellis P6000 $450 each??? dam man....
u might as well upgrade it to 18s 235/45 n put on Nankangs NS2 (Ive got them on now, and they grip very well) much better tyre and cost ya about $250 each...
You can visit www.tempetyres.com.au they do pretty good prices man
dont go over 225 on 17x7's as you can be defected for running too wide a profile for the rim (in Victoria)
Also, if the tyre place is insisting on them, get the to sign a document saying they are legally responsible to replace the tyres if your car is defected. They are probably insisting because its old stock they want to get rid of to an unsuspecting consumer.
What i do find amusing is people buy these nice (and somewhat expensive) wolliarts and then stick cheap and nasty shoes on them.
You spend 25k - 35k on a car, the least you can do is put some decent tyres on it.
BTW Pirellis are an overated tyre.
If you want bang for your buck then get some Goodyear Eagle F1 GS-D3 (http://www.goodyear.com.au/showtyregy2004.php?tyre=0000000156263)at around 250 a pop. (17x7). Ultra quiet, awsome in both wet and dry and fairly long lasting (up to 30,000km's with some serious driving mixed into it)\
*edit* Steer clear of anything Dunlop, especially the SP3000.. Bunch of junk (they are standard on the XR6T)

thnx for the response guys, really appreciated.
that tempetyres place looks great, shame im in perth
(ps sorry to kinda hijack your thread esemte :shifty: )
no dramas, asking the same thing myself :)
also, i read somewhere that those Bridgestone GIII's last about 70'000kms .. is this true ?
and i'll also think i'll stick to 225/50 .. might be more expensive, but its better to be on the safe side
those Goodyear Eagle F1's look great, arent they a soft compound tyre though?

couldnt agree more.. they also came out on the MK1 BA XR8 Utes.. (dad had one and had nothing but trouble with the tyres..) and the worst story i have heard of (actually seen) is my grandparents Euro Accord.. had the SP3000 as standard factory tyres.. by the time it hit 14,000kms they were bald.. the whole surface was smooth as glass..

When i put 235`s on mine it had heaps better traction than the 225`s.. The 225 had heaps less tread though.. :D

only needed two because two of em came with Bridgestone GII's
but for 225/50 i paid $235 a tyre, from Bridgestone themselves
they sound a little different from the Bob Jane Allrounders :bowrofl:
but i cant really compare with these being my first "performance" tyre
