I currently have a 10" Sony Xplod Sub in my boot now which gave really good base in my previous car (Excel), but since i got the Magna the sub is far less effective due to the size of the car/boot etc. Would it be better to get another 10" sub and have 2, or sell the 10" i have now and get 1 12" Sub? What would be more effective? Also does anyone know if the new Pioneer Slim 12" Subs are any good? :D

i would say 1x12", but.....

what amp have you got to run the sub and what's your budget?

1 decent sub will beat 2 cheaper subs any day for quality...
No real reason to go a slimline as ur not trying to save space.

Other options around.

Whats ur budget. What you after? something that sounds good and musical, or something loud to cruise around pumping?

I have a 800Watt Boss Amp powering both the sub and 2 x 200w 6"x9"s. The Amp is not an issue as i was going to have to get a better 1 either way i went. I don't want REAL LOUD where your car shakes and people 3 blocks down can hear ya commin. I just want nice "crisp" decent sounding bass. I have a budget of around $300 - $400 but the less the better. Im not afta some cheap azz sub thats like $100 though. Something decent!

I don't know why some people think 1 12" is better than an equal quality sub of 10" x2, i mean after all your moving almost twice as much air and there's just about twice as much speaker..

100 crap subs will sound as bad as 1 crap sub, only louder

I can assure you money invested in 1 quality sub will be much better spent.

The extra sub will add 3 db with the same power. And will not play any lower. So is good for SPL, but may be a one note wonder.

My progression has been
No subs
1x10"
2x10"
1x12"
2x12"

And after that I'm going back to 1 quality 12". With 2 x 9" mid subs up front for stereo duty.

2 subs can also muddy the signal slightly, and will usually mean the box you build for it will be smaller than optimal to fit it into your boot. If you have 1 sub in a proper large box, it will play lower than 2 subs in small poorly calculated boxes.

Subs are not all the same, size is by no means a measure of how 'good' a sub is. Many 9" or 10" subs will outperform cheaper 15" subs in output and quality.
Put simply you get what you pay for. 2 subs at 1/2 the price will perform about half as good in quality with an extra 3db due to the doubling in cone area.

Nick - 2 equal quality 10" will cost twice the price of 1 equal quality 12". Whilst it may not sound worse having two 'eqaul quality' subs I doubt it would sound twice as good.

I would go two subs to fill up my boot or make a boot install look a bit more symmetrical, (or for SPL)
But audibly the only benefit is that 3db unless you're wiring config cant get the most out of ur amps, (DVC usually takes care of this problem anyway)

Peace

Tim

Thanx guys, i think i'll go with 1 good quality 12". Wouldn't take up as much room as 2 x 10" either. Ciao!

What about those JVC Warren G subs, are they any good?

JVC Warren G subs are Strictly a Bass orientated sub...

They are more Boomy then smooth sounding..

I would look at JBL,Pioneer, Clarion and Jaycar before going with the Warren G's

The Strobocones sound good and are good Value as well as being Eye Catching but they are more Designed for Techno then R&B

Has anyone heard much about the "Peerless" brand? I was in Auto Barn a few weeks ago asking them for some advice and the guy recomended i get 4 x 10" Peerless subs cuz they r real good. I have never heard of that brand or seen them anywhere but I wasn't afta 4 subs anyway. If they were soo good why would i need 4 of them? He kept trying to get me to buy them so im not going back there. Also i went into Strathfield Car Radios and they recomended i get a $500 12" "MTX Sledge Hammer" which i haven't heard alot aboutbut are supposed to be good?

Peerless make very good drivers for hifi. I have no idea on the quality of their car orientated stuff though. 4x10" seems excessive though. Some car sound people see magnas and go ooohhhhh big boot lets fill it with subs, usually this is places like strathfield etc. If I was on a budget I would get 1x12" in a largish properly constructed box.

mtx sledge hammers are awesome only coz of the box if the box isnt nice big ported box sounds like ****. but to be honest you should focus more on the box you want for the type of bass your after.alpine mtx pioneer kicker clarion would be the best bet your after for 12" there all under the $300 mark and are all good quality. if you just do a search on enclouses it should tell you which would be suited for you ported sealed which ever. ebay has a good range such as these 2 alpines

I'd put Peerless up above most of the other brands mentioned in here...

But if you want good bass in comparison to good marketing...

Have a listen to

Image Dynamics
Digital Designs
Boston
RE Audio
Adire
Diamond

I don't like the sound of Boston subwoofers, I find that they don't come out as clear as perhaps, ImageDynamics. Though Boston are a lot better than anything like your $120 JL Audio subwoofers.

Boston G5 is pretty smooth. In the same field as IDmax DD3512 etc.

I've always liked Pioneer.... if i was to get the NEW 12" 1000W Pioneer Sub and 2 x 420W Pioneer 6" x 9"s what price would i be looking at for an Amp to power the 3? Im not all that great with what type of amps and stuff. i just want to know what kind of money i'll be looking at all up? The Sub in a Pioneer box is $239, and the 6" x 9" are $198. So far im looking at $437 + more for the amp. I have 2 x 200W 6" x 9" Sony Xplod's in the rear which were already in it when i bought the car but they're pretty average! thats why i wanna change em with the 420W Pioneer's. But if i find its all too expensive i will leave the 6" x 9" and upgrade em later when i get more cash!

I don't know if you should focus so much on the rear-fill, just throw it a set of 6" speakers, no need for 6x9s if you've got a subwoofer.
