View Full Version : 1st Gen Magna's- Whats handling?
Guy's
I own a stock 90 TP wagon... and i tell ya what... it handles like a real DOG.. not only does it pull to one side on the freeway but it has MASSIVE amount of body roll when trying to corner quickly or sharply. Idealy i would like to make it handle like its on rails... but being a TP Magna im sure this is almost impossible :P
So is there a fix for this? aftermarket parts? stiffer springs? Could there be something wrong with my Magna now? thrashed out shocks? etc.
I have just purchased a set of 17" wheels for the Mighty Magna so im hoping this might help a fraction. but anymore advice would be great.. suspension kits, adjustments, sway bar fitment you name it! HIT ME! :P

how much you willing to spend??
go for new shockers and springs (lowered springs) then new front and rear bushes then a final touch.. a rear sway bar.. all that your lookin at 1k if you do it all ya self but woah the difference trust me!

lol i thought my car was bad.
I would love it for my car to handle like a skyline or something :)
Would lowering it cause it to conflict with the 17" wheels? as its a tight fit as it is :P
aiight..shocks, springs and bushes... where can you source a sway bar for her?
Thanks!

just get springs if your on a budget and inspect the shocks while your fitting, if they are clapped out put them on the to do list.
the front bar is piss weak on them so for the 180 bucks i would replace that rather than fitting a rear bar.

whiteline is the answer. i had an 89 TP Wagon and went with their lowered springs and front and rear swaybars (biggest 1's they have, can't remember if there is a couple) and all i can say is OMFG the difference is amasing. After all that my limiting factor was tyres. BUT... save the bit extra and get matching shocks 2. just make sure if you do it yourself to get a good wheel alignment after.
as for ur 17" depends how wide they are. i had 215/60R14's on and they were catching the outside lip of the guard (nothing a small sledgehammer didn't fix). if i remember correctly there was some scrubbing on the inner plastic guard 2 but i think that was mostly dodgy shocks.
the others should have more info of the tyres.

try phillcom rally for all the gear
also with the 17s if you have the new suspenion setup you wont have to worry but if you put the 17s on now you will have problems with gard scraping
Thanks for the replies guys.
Ok, if i run the 17's with 215 tyres, on new shocks and maybe lowered springs (im thinking maybe only in the front? or no?) and either a rear or front (which is a better spend?) sway bar then im all set?
Checked out Whitelines website, got some decent gear, is fitting worth gettin someone else to do it? or can i attempt it at home?

fitting is a piece of the proverbial cake

24/22mm bar front/back
rear does squat when you have a strong front one.

looks like a simple bolt in job?
were all the holes already there? or did you have to drill to suit?

i disagree as in fwd when turning most the weight is transferred to the opposite side rear of the way your turning, putting a sway bar on the rear tones that transferred weight down...
but yeh i would get the rear done before the front as there is already one there crappy as it may be but theres still one there unlike on the rear unless the wagons had em stock??
also remember when installing it that the car has to be on the ground or be up on a hoist
OK... went shopping on Whitelines website...
this is what ive found
78402 Front Lowering spring kit 158.18
72708 Rear Lowering spring kit 158.18
BMR23 Front Heavy duty swaybar 171.82
BMF21 Rear Wagon Heavy duty swaybar 171.82
Total $660
Aint found any shocks to suit yet. Do i have to use Whiteline? or would i be just as better off with Monroe?

you will need a mounting kit for the rear bar.

Do i need to drill holes etc to mount it?

That's the best thing about these first gen magnas, they have terrible handling - means more fun in the wet when you lose control :-)
The setup i got on My TN wagon is Lovell lowered springs, And koni shocks all round. Made a Huge difference in handling, i normally drive in the hills about once a month, i used to average about 70kph throught the twistys, but after i did the suspension i could comfatably sit on about 100-110 through those corners
There's always the Gav's custom suspension mod. Lowers and improves handling at the rear. Cheap too!
2 bags of cement. My rear was rooted.

when my old shocks were stuffed i got some KYB excel g gas shocks from RPW in perth. anyway once i got them installed, no more bodyroll !!! these shocks are really good, the ride comfort is much the same, just a lot firmer and faster rebound.
before i would slow down to 40 to get over the speedbump near my house and sometimes it would still scrape slightly. now at 60, downchange to 3rd and accelerate as i reach the bump and it goes over no fuss at all kingswood style ! :D
i dont know why people are so keen to lower a road car, it doesnt make sense to me. it does look good and it does lower the centre of gravity for improved handling but its at a cost. id rather have the stock ride height, for getting over bumps, kurbs, etc without damaging the car.
like theres this chick at work who's 17 shes doing her learners. anyway she bought a vr commodore a couple of months ago. and before she gets her license shes had it tinted, a sports exhaust put on and now she wants it lowered.
