I have a few problems with my car  which i am going to get fixed in the near future. I was just wondering if anyone could tell me roughly how much all these things would cost to get fixed. The car is a 1993 TR executive manual.
-The starter motor need fixing, or replacing. It sticks and grinds and makes all sorts of embarrasing noises.
-The gearbox. It crunches really badly into 2nd if you just change normally, but not if you change at snails pace like i have had to do for some time now. It also crunches slightly into 3rd sometimes and only very occasionally into 4th.
-There is that "ticking sound" as it is often refered to as. Probably a noisy tappet?
Thats all, if anyone has had to have any of these things done to their car or just knows about how much it will cost it would be apreciated. Thanks.

It depends on what you can do yourself, hows your spanner skills?
The starter is a bit of a pain but you can do it with basic tools.
The tappet/lifter/cam follower is a do-able job but with require more skill and a manual.
The gearbox could be a clutch problem, you might try changing the gearbox oil and see how it looks. If the oil is dark and smells burnt or has a lot of metal filings or pieces in it, its probably time for a box change or overhaul. If its bright and smells unburnt you may just have a clutch problem.
There must be some ACT members :poke: who could check it 4 you if you dont have the mech skills.
As for price, I can only suggest you ring around locally or get someone who can speak the speak to do it 4 you. If you dont sound like you know much on the phone the price tends to increase, same thing happens to women when they ask these questions.
Come on you ACT guys, help him out :D

 Im not a complete idiot you know...Yes there is enough oil! And no i dont really wanna do it myself, id rather get a professional to do it all. Last time i had some work done on my car, was about when the crunching into 2nd had just started to be a problem, they changed the transmission oil to see if that would help, but it didnt. That was a few months ago. So there is nothing wrong with the transmission oil, it is relatively new.

If you want i could take a look at it for you, or could recomend a couple of good mechanics.
You should come out to Braddon one night, generally there are a few of us out there, just up from the Ford dealership roundabout.
Maybe one of the others guys could help you out aswell.

With the oil I just meant to use it as an indicator of gearbox condition, I didnt mean that was the problem. :D
That looks like a good offer from temagna, you should see him.

lol its actually not that funny though. My mums old car had a similar problem of crunching into second gear, changed the transmission oil and it never had a problem again...

i wasnt trying to be a smartass man, i was just saying that we had the same thing happen with our and all it was was it needed a top up (burns oil like a mofo atm - currently a big problem)
as for ideas....i was gonna say get it flushed but it seems you already have....maybe the box might be completly gone

I rang the place i normally get my car serviced today to get a rough idea of how much it would cost to get my car fixed. This is what they said...
1. New starter motor: $230 - $240
2. Synchro's: $900 - $1500
3. Noisy Tappets fixed: $200
4. New Clutch (possibly): $850 (this would be cheaper because of the synchro's needing doing too)
All of these prices are inclusive of labour charges...
Do they sound about right?

try changing your transmission fluid and then using a 30w60 oil to keep it all quiet.
at least it will get you till you have enough money to fix it or sell it while its quiet

Second gen boxes for the 4cyl are fairly common, try using a very thin oil as this often works wonders.
850 for a clutch is a rip off, for that you could almost drive to adelaide, pay me to do it and drive back.
Gear box, you can get a reco for about 900, KB got one about a year ago for the v6
Starter, $125.00 for a re manufactured one, will last as long as a new one as all critical parts are replaced, they mainly use the old housing, should be able to get a good one from a wrecker for about 35-45 bucks
Tappets are the only price that are near the ball park, be sure it is not your balance chain first though
