As most of you know on here, I have been without my red beast for a while now. After being sick and tired of not having it and seeing it get rougher and rougher from sitting I decided to just wack the engine out of a wrecked TR in it until I get my brand new block done.

Put it all in and together, got it running and the clutch fork's pivot was a little noisy (in a thread made a few days ago). Sorted that out, everything seemed sweet. Fixed some oil leaks today and a dodgy CV and thought "YES, I am finished... Time to go for a drive"

Drove 4 Km out of town and a lovely noise (almost like a big end) reared it's ugly head. Pulled over, checked everything - started it again and the noise is coming from the gearbox - the INPUT SHAFT DIED!!!!!

OMFG I have had no luck with this bastard, all I can do right now is laugh :bowrofl: and wish I had an auto instead of a manual :)

No you don't.

The auto's are made out of recycled hand grenades...

Still, I know how you feel. Iron Paw did something similar.

I have owned several automatic Magnas before and they have been pretty good. The manual on the other hand has been a b*tch. Clutch hydraulics, clutch itself, syncros, sloppy diff, now the input shaft.

Yet again, the mate's old TS manual (V6) was as bad too :)

my manual gearbox has done 215,000km's without a problem. still on the original clutch.

340,000 Astron Ks on mine plus a addiontional 20,000 4G63T ks. If my box can cope the power of my engine and my harsh changes i think it shows how strong these gearboxes really are.

That isnt bad. I do think that the Elante had been thrashed before I got it (but doesnt explain my mate's TS). Given that the driveshafts had been replaced 3 years before I got it and were shagged, that the engine had been rebuilt and was shagged, etc - I think it was poorly looked after.

Have you guys had syncro issues? It is a common issue with the KM210/F5M3x (so much so that Mitsubishi issued a TSB on them). There is an article on my website about that (but it is down ATM for god knows why else I'd paste it here)

Yeah, mine's at 290,000+, and I'm only replacing the clutch as a matter of course.

Box is OK, apart from the 3-2 downchange

yeh, i dont have any syncros left i can pop it in any gear at any speed
but i have given my box alot of hell like droping back in 1st just to lock it all up lol
but it only has a few issues like the crunch from 2 - 3 and sometimes it doesnt go in reverse but no biggie
but ill probally get it rebuilt soon any way cos it has to come out with the motor and ill get a new cluch too as this ones got no play left :doubt:

The 2-3 and 4-3 change is caused by a spring. If my damn website was up I could get the details and part numbers but the f*&^ing thing is down.

Autos suck big time, Ive had the manual TP for around 6 odd years, goes like a champ, my bro bought a 2ng gen TR (I think) one straight after the TP, anyway, its just been done up, and, when I was driving it was so freaken slow, god ive never hated driving the magna, til i drove that.

Plus I kept going for a clutch that just wasnt there....lol, yeah its got nutting to do with the fact im a chick, and no Im not freaken blonde either, its just a hard habit to break....

Again autos are the pits

oh and mine is sometimes a little hard to get into reverse, gotta dip the clutch a bit and try again.

This engine i got from RPW when i found out my old was stuffed. It runs perfectly without the balance shafts, no vibrations or anything. although with my exhaust i probably wouldnt notice anyway *no resonator* :D. aparently it frees up around 10HP.

The 2-3 and 4-3 change is caused by a spring. If my damn website was up I could get the details and part numbers but the f*&^ing thing is down.

According to Mitsubishi TSB 91-22-031 all transmissions built after 11 November, 1991 had modifications made to the 1-2 synchroniser hub and sleeve, the 1-2 synchroniser spring and the 3-4 synchroniser spring. Mitsubishi states that the improvements can be made to gearboxes made prior to 11/11/91 so long as the 1-2 synchroniser hub, sleeve and spring are changed at the same time. The 3-4 syncroniser spring can be changed by itself without affecting the rest of the 3-4 syncroniser assembly.

The parts required for the modification are:

1-2 synchro spring (New P/N: MD742455 Replaces: MD739065)
1-2 synchro hub and sleeve (New P/N: MD742465 Replaces: MD738868)
3-4 synchro spring (New P/N: MD742441 Replaces: MD738050

Interestingly I havent seen syncro problems from 1-2 LOL
