View Full Version : How to install a switch for the power antenna

My power antenna drives me nuts goin up and down when I change modes on my stereo. I would like to have an independent switch for it to stay up or down. Or a switch to disasscoiate it from the stereo.
Has anyone done this before? And what is the easiest way to do this? I know this is bit of a noob question - but I don't know if the power antenna gets a constant supply of power to stay or up or is just powered to go up and to come down...
Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Do you have amps in your car?
The way the Pioneers have to be wired up for electric antenna is to the remote wire. It's ****in annoying cos whenever the stereo is on, the antenna is up... even if it's the CD player.
If this is what you want, try pulling your HU out, and taking the wire which goes to power for the antenna, and instead of using the dedicated electric antenna wire from the HU, try finding the remote wire (assuming it's got one on the stock HU) and using that.
Another way would be to use acc power, but I'm not 100% sure on this. I think electric ariels only need something like 300mA... I'm not sure what acc power is.
:)
*EDIT* And after reading your question again, You could just find the power wire coming from the HU, insert a longer piece of wire, and mount a switch in there. Basically so that one position creates and open circiut, and the other position closes the circiut (and puts the antenna up)

Dude I put a switch on my Pioneer unit and it is easy as. All you have to do is follow the antenna cord and cut it, mine was in the black protective plastic. Go down to Dick Smiths or Jaycar and by a $2 switch but make sure it is suitable for automotive use.
Where you have cut the cord just solder and heatshrink a longer cord coming from each and attach the two cords to either side or the two clips on the switch ( there should only be 2 ).
I have a manual gear boot in my centre bit and it lives near that, people think it is a NOS switch or something. Best thing I ever did. :D

I didn't even think NOS could run off a switch? Guess it can, since it happen'd in Fast and the Furious it's possible.

You can make it activate a couple of ways, I think the most sensible is through your computer so you can tune it exactly when you need it in each gear.

I have a Clarion - so it only puts it up when I am on radio mode - but when I swirtch from Aux to mp3 it goes through radio mode - and the aeria goes up and down - a bit retarded...
Anyway, thanks for the info - so I guess the power antenna output from the headunit is what "tells" the antenna to go/up and stay up, and disconnecting this causes the antenna to come down?
any ways...
just get the wirse from yur antenna and connect it up to a switch
there is a yellow and a red wire that go to the back of yur headunit so u can hack into one of them so that u can put the switch in there

mine does this also, but when its down i dont get very good reception so i dont mind it goin up and down

Correct. The wire that it would be connected to now is dedicated for power antenna. When it is in radio mode, there is a current going down through this wire, and when the antenna detecs a current, it goes up.
Whent his current stops, the antenna goes down.
The amp remote wire basically has current going through it whenever the HU is on, and simply tells amps to turn on when a current is detected.
If you want the antenna to be always up when the HU is on, connect the antenna wire to the remote wire, and wala! :D

Geez you guys reply quickly! Thanks heaps! I might put that switch in when I pull off the console to install my carputer...
That's another story in itself...

If you have a 3rd gen all you have to do is pull the centre plastic thing out ( thing that goes around your gear stick ) and look into the hole that is far left as if you are trying to look at the rear of you headunit. You should see a plastic jacket that is black and hose like. It is easy to break so gently break it and see if it has a single wire in it. Make sure it looks like it is going to the headunit but it was the only wire in a jacket in that area when I looked. From memory it is yellow and red. Easy.
The hard bit is deciding what type of switch you would like :D
If you're after a spot to put the switch, this is where mine is.
Just had to sandpaper the hole larger, and bobs you uncle and fannies your aunt.
Right next to the bonnet release.

I've just had an electric antenna fitted today. The old one was stuffed i.e. rusted, jammed. The thing is the antenna goes up regardless whether i'm playing a CD or radio. Previous posts mentioned installing a manual switch. Is this the only way to fix my problem?
Or should the antenna be hooked up differently to my headunit (Pioneer DEH-P5750MP) to solve this? Right now it's just a straight plug-and-play into the antenna port at the back of the headunit.

yeah pioneers do this, as mine does as well, and i think a manual switch would b the only way to fix it. personally i just live with it, rather not b bothered flickin a switch everytime i start a cd/stop a cd

Yeah, as mentioned. The only way with the Pioneers is to install a manual switch. I've done it and it took all of 20 mins, including pulling it apart and putting it back together :)

oh and just to add to the original point in the thread, my new eclipse unit drops the antenna wen using cd/aux :) any of the other new ones do that?
Sorry to bring a thread back from the dead, but i have a quick question. I'm sitting in the car right now installing a new Pioneer HU. All the wiring is done except for the antenna, and i'm a little confused.
1. So Pioneer units can't control the antenna?
2. If you have an AMP using the remote cable then where does the antenna cable connect?
3. The antenna wire is pink, anyone know what the Green/White Stripe one is for?
I think thats about it..
Any help would be much appreciated

You will have to connect the antenna wire to the "amp power" wire, the downside is that when ever the HU is on the antenna will be up.
Can I connect a wire into the RED ACC wire to a switch then the switch to the antenna wire?
Thats the way i am understanding it

you could connect the antenna wire to the amp wire and then put a switch on the antenna wire so you can put it up or down when you want
Awesome a straight answer, Thanks Buddy!

Since when do Pioneer headunits not have a Rem Ant. wire?
What model is your headunit?

My Pioneer does not.
I used a 'on,off,on' switch and kept control of the half height function.
As in, on= full height, off= down & the other on postion = half height. This is brilliant for car parks as the Pioneer (AVH-P6850) doesn't have the rem ant signal wire.
So its all installed and i have the arial all working now :dancin:
This is the 3rd HU i have had in the car, previously had a DVD HU but got over it, wanted something nice and neat, looks like its supposed to be there and sits flush.
Oh and works deliciously with iPhone...
Thanks for all your help guys
Heres the Unit in question.. Pioneer FH-6065UB
It went into a Pacific Blue VRX, so it suits the car so well

Looks so modern too.
Yeah DVD HU's too me are just for show. and considering they are usually about $800 more then a normal HU well It's alot to show a few movies..
What are these babies worth?

I saw this on eBay, so i rang Pioneer & JB Hi-Fi and both said it won't be in Australia until end of december. & will retail for around $600. It got it off eBay for $350 delivered with the iPod connection cable.
Just a little eBay shop based in Melbourne

1. So Pioneer units can't control the antenna?
Yes they can, but there trigger is a constant on trigger. so when ever the deck is on this wire is live.
2. If you have an AMP using the remote cable then where does the antenna cable connect?
Same wire. Both will run off this fine. but if you want to have control of the antenna put in an on/off switch (not a momentary switch) between the deck output and the pink wire in the factory harness
3. The antenna wire is pink, anyone know what the Green/White Stripe one is for?
Green/white is the illumination wire

where did you mount the switch?
I placed it on the lower kick panel (drivers side) in line with the small square plastic cover.
I highly recommend thinking about a location which is easially accessable, looks as factory as possible, and uses a part that is freely available. Eg. my lower dash panels are light grey. Which is the same as the majority of the later 3rd gens. If I had ruined the panel, many more are freely available!

That HU looks very VERY slick. I know we all have different taste, but I personally HATE the way aftermarket HU's poke out of the dash/console and look tacked-on. So I run with standard HU's for now.
I managed to #### a Verada aerial by not understanding how the power-aerial behaved. having put a Kenwood cheapy in my Sports for a bit, it only EVER had aerial up in Radio mode.
Then I bought Verada TJ (I) with factory radio and 4CD in-dash unit. Went into drive-thru car wash - flicked radio into "CD" mode and started car wash........ only to see my aerial mangled!
This darn $#%# radio will keep mast up if radio was on, but if power-down in tape/cd mode mast retracts and won't raise when car is next started.... until you swith to radio.
This led to the discovery that TJ (I) Verada's have a different power antenna - 5 wires, compared to TL's etc which have 3-wires. Verada unit has replaceable mast, at least. Took ages for local AutoBarn to order an Aerpro replacement - 20/30 bucks cheaper than genuine mast and plastic rack/rope, and EXACT match for genuine mast.
STILL was a cheaper episode than the time I #$@^ a drivers door of TP in a car wash - I have to laff how stoopid that was!!
Hey Guys,
I took some photos of the new head unit and the switch i installed for the antenna. The unit is fantastic, and its pretty much flush with the center dash. What ya think? I would recommend this unit over and over..
+ the iphone capability is awesome.
All i need now is for my broken ankle to heal, then i can drive the bastard again haha
Sean.

Hey guys,
While this topics still up here, I was wondering where I can get an electric antenna for my 96 Magna, the original manual one's snapped off.
And are they easy enough to install?.. Steps?
Cheers! :D
