View Full Version : Bonnet Scoops - CAI ???

Just wondering...
I did a quick search on CAI and Water but didn't find out what I wanted to know.
Lots of threads on this forum talk about the amount of water getting into the CAI inlet (and ways of stopping it and even if it's a risk at all unless ya drive thru a river!).
If you have a pipe/tube running from the front of the car up to the airbox then I guess any rain etc. would probably not make it all the way - hence limited problem.
But what if you were to have an inlet in a scoop or something similar on the bonnet (like lots of cars have).
How do they stop the intake of water when a bonnet scoop is used for CAI ?
(and while I'm thinking about it (what are roof scoops for ???))

A mate of mine has done what you mention to his EL XR6. He took out the passenger side bonnet scoop, cut a hole in his air box, fitted stainless steel inlet tubing with a ram pod and put a cold air scoop on that he spent months whittling out of a solid piece of plastic! Everything that he puts his hand to works out spot on! It looks very factory, has a proper rubber seal on it and it actually works! Much to his dismay, however, my Magna accelerates damn near as hard as his XR6! I cant get anywhere near his XY 351 GS though! :D

you will not get water into your engine through a pod filter and a CAI. Besides the fact that K&N filters are coated in oil, and can be wrapped in a dry-sock (special sock tht fits over the pod to stop dust and moisture clogging the filter), there is no way your engine will suck water all the way up your cai , past all the restrictions into your engine.
But, in answering your question on bonnet scoops and the like, i beleive it a great idea if you can get it all legal. If your only doing it for the drags, ii'd suggest taking out your headlight and getting some cold air that way lol

good luck
oh yeah also, roof scoopes are to cool the inside of cars where air-conditioning and operating windows cannot be used (rally cars)

the evo bonnet has "in" hold on the sides of the bonnet .. would suck alot of cold air if u did it properly.... or u could save that money and do something more worthwhile performance wise ...... cos at end of day no matter how much thought u put into a CAI its still just air :P

Its also used in rally driving to keep a positive pressure in the car so that dust is kept on the outside of the car.

Thanks for the responses guys.
Okay, so the engine cannot get water - but won't the K&N Panel or Pod get too wet to continue to function properly ?
Maybe I need to take a look at a car with a forward facing vent one day.
Oh, and thanks for the responses to the roof vents - always wondered that.
