well my sis has a 1997 lancer 2door coupe and the fan speed slector thing isnt workin. when i put the fan speed to 1 or 2 it dosnt work but on 3 and 4 it works. ne idea wats wrong.

I have exactly the same problem on my wife's 93 lancer - but sorry nfi what the problem actually is :confused:

burnt contacts on the selector by the sounds of things. shouldnt be too much of a problem replacing with a unit from the wreckers.. mates CC 94 model did this exact thing.

Does 3 & 4 FEEL like 3&4, or 1 &2? try clicking past 4 and seeing if it gets stronger, the switch just may need re-aligning.

The fan speed controllers that I have seen are fairly basic. They use a multi position switch to switch between voltage dropping resistors. At full fan speed there are no resistors switched in. At the lowest fan speed all the resistors are switched in.

The resistors are little more than coils, usually mounted somewhere in the heater box or ducting. They can become loose or break with vibration. They may or may not be easily accessable from under the dashboard. You will need to inspect around the heater box for a small panel, fixed to the side of the heater or its ducting, with an electrical connector attached to it.

Someone on the forum may know the location on your vehicle, but on a Lancer, you shouldn't have to look far.

3&4 feel like 3&4 but no action from 1&2. and i cant go past 4.

mmmm

its a smal car and i dun like digging into small cars coz every thing is so small and compact and in hard to reach places and i also have hands with big bones lol. is the like a lance forum that ne 1 knows off. i might try there.

I agree with TC, either burnt/worn out contacts or stuffed ressistors. Not a hard job to replace the whole switch, just take a little time to get to it :P .

Same problem occured on an old N12 Pulsar my mum used to have. I just measured the maximum value of the resistors and swapped the switch with an equivalent POT.

But that was an old car, you will want somthign factory looking :P

dont worry about the switch in the dash...Your problem is the fan resistor as mentioned before it is located in the Evap Box if it has A/C if it doesn't it will be in the duct pipe non A/C

I don't quite understand - why would a faulty fan resistor cause 1 and 2 not to work but allow 3 and 4 to work - also the car in question is a Lancer the pics are for a magna - is it in the same spot in a lancer?

Quite simple

1st fan most resistance, 2nd fan less resistance these two run on the same circuit..

3rd and 4th run on a second circuit and have less resistance there fore are less likely to blow..
