Anyone have to problem of their Magna not starting, but with a bit of effor it will eventually start???
But this does not happen all of the time.
Might go 2 to 3 days of running right before it has its little hissy fit.
Also, the idle runs high then decides to sit at about 800 or so, but not consistent.
Once it does start tho u get the petrol smell.
Any advice
Paul

Does it turn at all? I have experienced similar probs just lately. Still to analyse what it is. Seems like immobiliser. Mine turns ok, but no starting. -96 3.0 TE Auto.
So far I have noted, that if I insert the key, turn ign on, allow all the dashlights go out, then turn and it starts ok. But as I said, this has been occurring only few times now and I only drive it on the weekends, so not many starts as yet to establish a pattern.

When your car doesnt start does the engine light come on?
Coz mine does this but its only the key reader which isnt an expensive thing to overcome.
I have a 96 TE Manual and the other 96 TE Manual does the same thing.
I just wait a few minutes then come back to it and its all ok.

U mean the little engine symbol? Cannot remember now.... I'll check.
So u reckon it's the immobiliser code reader which is bit slow?

Yes the little engine symbol.
Well after the 3rd time this happened, we checked everything we could think of that could make this occur- all electrical systems or whatever n found nothing wrong with anythin.

Yeah I know what you guys mean.. I had the same problem.. but I have fixed it.. It was the immobiliser system.. I got it disconnected and haven't had a problem since.. What happens is thoes year modle magnas
Have a kill switch in the ignition thats connected to ya security system.. and you need the keyless entry to disable it.. one good thing about this but.. if you keep trying it will start after awile.. most car have the kill switchs on the fuel system.. if ya had the problem and ya car has the kill switch on the fuel system theres noway you going to get it started.. anyway it easy to get around all ya have to do is unloack and lock ya door with ya keyless and it should start..also some immobiliser system have there own kill switch just in case you loss it.

I think u hit the nail on the head here guys, i havent noticed the light but ill keep an eye out for it. As for the keyless remotes mine are both dead, which leads to disabling the kill switch, how is this done, and thanx for the replies!!

I just wait til the engine light disappears coz the car will start then, i remember someones car being towed away and the starter motor being blamed for this.
I didnt even have remotes for my car either and now that i do it still does it.

Ill look into this some more, i think that by disabling the kill/imobilizer circuit will cure the problem. i did find a remote last night, and gave it to the wife to try the unlock/lock trick cause she drives the car.
Or if anyone knows how to bypass please let us know

My car had the same problem, RAC blamed the "fuel injection".. found out it was the barrel antenna and got that replaced. No more problems.

Had a drive yesterday. Ign on, wait for the engine symbol go out - didn't, turn key, engine turns but doesn't start. Pull out key, re-insert, wait for engine symb to go - which it did this time after some 10 sec. Started ok. Several starts after that (short drives), I only needed to wait 5-10 sec for the symbol to disappear to start ok. If it's on, no start.
So, this is the work-around for it, thanks.
Problem? The immobiliser system key reading unit faulty or the actual key chip it self?
