Hi again,
I am still looking for a 12", but this is going for a good price on CAA.
It's an Image dynamics ID10 V.3 D4 and stats are as follows:
Size: 10 inch
Rec. Sealed Box Dims: 0.40 - 0.80 cu.ft.
Rec. Ported Box Dims: 1.10 - 1.60 cu.ft.
Free Air Usage: yes
Sensitivity: 85.6 dB
Frequency Response: 10-150 Hz
Recommended RMS Power: 250W
Peak Power Handling: 500W
Impedance: dual 4 ohms subwoofer wiring options
For $150 (or whatever I can get it for), this could be a cheap little addition to my subless system. I like the small box and i've read some good reviews.
Opinions?
How should I run this? I only have 4ohm outputs available, but one or two channels and enough power for me.
I would be running it by itself untill the day I decide I need another one lol
Cheers,
Danno

If your after that quality bass without the volume then this is a fantastic sub. Ported might be the way to go if you are low on power and want better lower Hz response.
What are you running at the moment? Its amazing how many 12inch subs you can get for around the $100-150 new these days.

to be honest, I'm just after a nice small cheap sub that has SQ qualities. I don't want it to be overpowering, but I decided a 10 is as good as a 12 for what I'm interested in.
I'm sure it'll be loud enough for my needs, and if not, I can get another one and put them in a larger ported box. It's only $150 at the end of the day.
Running focal 165kp's and 6x9's (good uns) off the deck, and a PG Q2350 and Q4150 are on the way. Specs are (all at 4 ohm):
2350: 2 x 100wrms or 1x 350wrms
4150: 4 x 50wrms or 2 x 180wrms
How should I run the system if I introduce a DVC 4+4 sub like this one?

Hmmm what I would do is :
Run all the speakers off the 4150 for 50WRMS per channel.
Run the sub off the 2350, Each coil getting a channel for a total of 200WRMS ( 100 x2 ). OR
Wire the sub in series for an 8ohm load and run it off the same amp in bridged mode.
I wouldn't use the 4 channel for the sub as even if you bridge all the channels to power a coil each it will be dam near impossible to run the coils at the same power without a lot of testing and for an SQ that power can be better utilised. As far as running the sub I would probably go the first option with running each coil off 1 channel of the 2 channel amp. This way the THD will be kept down and it will be running it with all the power it needs and being that the channels are running off the same gain, you will have both coils running at the same power.
Do you get a box and the sub for $150?
Should be a sweet sounding system though with correct placement and deadening :D

Yea, it should sound good... I'm aiming for good sound, not super loud sound.
Having said that, I still want it to be loud enough to drive down south at 120km/h with all the windows open and still only be able to hear the music lol
I want to keep the focals powered right up. Could I run the focals off 100wrms per channel off the 2350 and run the sub off the 4150 bridged into 2 channels (@ 180wrms/channel) with each channel running a coil?
What about if I ran the focals off the 3150 and the 6x9's off 2x50w channels of the 4150 and the sub off one 180wrms channel of the 4150?
Can I run the sub at all off a single channel, or will the resistance be too high for the ammount of power I'm giving it? Or will something blow up?
How does resistance load, dual coils and power output work?
I've been trying to read up on this, but not a lot of info around

I dunno, I've never been satisfied with 10" subwoofers whether bred for SQ or not. I'd personally keep saving up and have a look at the 12" ID subwoofer.

I've never liked 12's though... maybe most I've heard have been crap and out of tune.
Probably...
I have this crazy idea in my head that a 12 will produce sound much lower than the rest of my system, which I don't want. I just want something to compliment what I have and go a bit lower than the 6x9's... hence why I'm into a 10.
But I'm actually shopping for a 12, because everyone I know that knows what they are talking about have said go the 12. The 10 is just a bargain really, so I am after a few opinions to see how they go- in particular, the one for sale (ID10 V.3)

Well it should do just that.

It should be loud enough, at that pace I dont know why you would want the windows down.. do you have long hair??? :P
I want to keep the focals powered right up. Could I run the focals off 100wrms per channel off the 2350 and run the sub off the 4150 bridged into 2 channels (@ 180wrms/channel) with each channel running a coil?
You could do that but it would be really hard to adjust the gains so they are giving the same output to each coil. It would be like running 2x 2channel amps to a DVC sub. The time and effort usually isn't worth it. You will need to do lots of testing with alot a machines to get them exactly right.
What about if I ran the focals off the 3150 and the 6x9's off 2x50w channels of the 4150 and the sub off one 180wrms channel of the 4150?
You could do that but the only way you could run it bridged over ch 3 & 4 is to wire the sub in series to present an 8 ohm load. This would mean the power of the 180WRMS bridged channel would become only say 90WRMS.
Can I run the sub at all off a single channel, or will the resistance be too high for the ammount of power I'm giving it? Or will something blow up?
Do you mean single coil? You can but not advisable.
How does resistance load, dual coils and power output work?
In your case you have a DVC 4ohm sub. You have 3 wiring options. Wire it in parallel ( +ive to +ive and -ive to -ive )and you will have a single 2ohm load. Wire the sub in series (+ive to - ive on both coils ) and you will have an 8 ohm load. Wire each coil to a channel for 2x 4ohm loads.
2 channel amps ( unless they are boston etc ) will have a minimum 4 ohm acceptable of resistance when they are bridged. Therefore you can have 4 ohm or higher presented to the amp. Maybe you look into a mono block that can handle a single 2ohm load or even a 1 ohm load.
2 channels when not in bridge mode can accept a 2 ohm load though. Think of a 4 channel amp as 2x 2channel amps in one.
As you increase your resistance, say go from 4 ohm to 8 ohm, as a rough guide you will be halving the power. Think of it as a pipe, a 1 ohm load is a huge pipe, 2 ohm is smaller, 4 ohm even smaller, 8 ohm smaller still.
I've been trying to read up on this, but not a lot of info around

Thats ok, it will take some time but im sure you will have it figured out soon. :D

Actually, the mullet is getting there hey lol Nah, I'm a bit like a dog, love it with the window down lol

Yea, I did the physics at uni... P=VI and V=IR.
Think it's a wonder why I had to repeat :bowrofl:
I think I get it, thanks for clarifying that.
Seems after all that the guy has sold it pending payment... :headbange
Oh well, I might look at getting a new or second hand IDQ series or DD25 series. 10 or 12, I'm not really fussed. I'll see what comes up in the second hand market for a while.
At least now I know to go for in terms of coils. If I get a DVC 2+2, I'll be able to run each coil in series hey? with a decent single 4 ohm output?
Are SVC subs any better or worse than DVC subs?

Yeh dvc 2+2 can be run at 1 ohm or 4 ohm.
SVC and DVC will both sound the same. Neither is better audibly. Just dvc have more wiring options. Generally match the VC to the amp to get most power.
Peace
Tim
