View Full Version : Stupid amp question..
Hey guys, I've got one that is pretty simple but really I'm not that sure about it.
The dilemma is this, I've got a ****ty BOSS BA4800 4 chan 300wrms amp, Now the way I ran it in my old magna was front MB's off chans 1 & 2, thats fine, 4 ohm loads off a 4 ohm amp, i ran my 6x9 MB's off the head deck and then I ran my little lonely JL10W3v2-D2 (damn! long!) off the 3&4 chans bridged, now when bridging my 4 ohm channels I make an 8ohm load right? and since its a DVC sub i should be able to wire it to a 4ohm load (series) and that way it will work with an 8omh load but wont have as much power because its not running off 8ohms..
is that right?? I kinda chase my tail with this crap and end up back at the beginning but I've only just started giving a stuff about car audio so its still pretty new..
From what I think I know, I've wired it as right as I can, in series with a 4ohm load, with parrallel creating a 1ohm load would most likely cause some tears so I thought my low knowledge logic should be trusted there..
This is the manual in PDF, shows loads wiring ways etc (theres only two choices but eh!) http://mobile.jlaudio.com/pdfs/8841.pdf

and since its a DVC sub i should be able to wire it to a 4ohm load (series) and that way it will work with an 8omh load but wont have as much power because its not running off 8ohms..It's a 2 ohm dual voice coil sub? You need to wire it in series to produce a 4 ohm load. If you wired it in parallel, you'd be making a 1 ohm load which very very few amps will support, and certainly no ****ty BOSS amps.
In this effect, the 4 ohm load would be shared by both channels of the bridged output, with each channel seeing 2 ohms resistive load.
You could also just not bridge channels 3 & 4, just run 1 coil from each channel of the amp, each channel would see 2 ohms still.
is that right?? I kinda chase my tail with this crap and end up back at the beginning but I've only just started giving a stuff about car audio so its still pretty new.. No it's not.... most car audio runs on 4 ohm resistive loads, not 8 ohms like most home and PA equipment.
From what I think I know, I've wired it as right as I can, in series with a 4ohm load, with parrallel creating a 1ohm load would most likely cause some tears so I thought my low knowledge logic should be trusted there..If you have wired up the sub in series, it will show a 4 ohm load (2ohms + 2 ohms = 4 ohms). If you connect this to the bridged output of the amp, it will be fine.
This is the manual in PDF, shows loads wiring ways etc (theres only two choices but eh!) http://mobile.jlaudio.com/pdfs/8841.pdfYou want to do it as per the TOP LEFT wiring diagram. Follow that, you will be fine!
Yeah i followed that diagram. Which config would give more power to the sub, bridged 3&4 or 3 and 4 running each coil seperately? would there be any difference?
from what you said im getting it like this:
AMP 75w-4ohm ea chan
3 4
\ /
|150w-2 ohm single chan
/\
[O] 4ohm load
...right?
AMP
3 4
| |
[O]
i think i read somewhere when you load something with half the ohms is made to run it halves the power too, so if i bridge the 4ohms to make a 2ohm 150w single chan and then run a 4ohm load off it it actually only gets 75w.. maybe not.. anyway which way would see the best use of power? i'd assume theres no diff but you tell me.

Probably bridged. Tim could confirm.
No, not entirely right on the power... 75W @ 4 ohm.... halve the resistance, double the power... so 150W ( at 2 ohm x 2 channels) = 300w 4ohms.
Different amps have different ratings, huge generalisation above but gives an idea.
Remebering it's a crap amp, best way to get power out of itt is to rip it out and bin it, and run with a nice Jaycar monoblock. It's crying out for more power, and you are probably giving it a clipped signal to get it loud enough.
I just can't believe you're running a great JL sub off a Boss amp.... dude that must suck. Just get a JL 500.1 like me and kick loose!

buy me one and i will! haha, i bought the boss before i had anything and it just kinda stayed around, its been pretty good, i got 129dB with that set up i mentioned before but i'm aiming for better things now i've got my eclipse cd5425, mm 5v preouts. I looked at those jaycar amps today and they're a good price for what they are, but are they actually any good? i'd say they're better than boss but is there anything out there for the same money thats better??
so if i bridge my 3&4 i'm getting 300w @ 4ohms?
