A little while back i saw a bit of presumably transmission fluid at the bottom of gearbox. it stopped by itself and i lost very little fluid, but my gearbox feels a bit rougher then it used to. can i top up (or better yet, replace) the transmission fluid reasonably easily?

Yeah its not hard.. i did it on a auto not long ago for the first time.. Its just like changing ur engine oil but ur filter is up the top and u gotta fill it up through the dipstick.. u will get all but two llitres out as its sitting in the talk converter.. u need special machine to get that out.. its all good though.. car will like the fresh oil..:P

thanks, but i'm after some instructions for a manual. in a lot of cars this is often much more involved then in an auto which can usually be checked via a dipstick.

wriggle under the car and you will see either either a 1/2 inch socket hole in a nut or a 24mm nut which is the drain plug. this will be the only nut on the very bottom of the transmission.
undo it and be ready for the fluid to drain out.
redo that nut up with a new brass washer if its a little tatty
on the side of the gearbox, exactly half way up there will be another big nut (around the 24mm size). undo it and using a funnel and some tube fill it with some castrol VMX80 until it starts spilling out the fill hole. this is when you know it is full so simply put the filler nut back on with a new brass washer and you will have clean fluid.
VMX 80 is quality transaxle gear oil and will have it feeling like new.

thanks heaps mate! i always try to do stuff like this myself mainly to learn how, but also because you know you didn't take any shortcuts and did it properly.

just finished it off then. wow! the shifts are much smoother (but still have that syncho clunk...). if it feels gritty when changing gears i'd definately recommend this. i could write up a little how to if anyones interested.

That would be great mate, ill host it on my website, just get pics of the drain and filler plugs
just out of interest, do the magnas have a bolt or the wierd 1/2 inch socket slot in the filler and drain plug?

the drain plug is a 24mm bolt and the fill plug is a smaller bolt which you wouldn't think to use if it didn't have the word "oil" on it.
4cyl 2nd gen manuals, have a drain plug and a level plug in the side of the box. fill it through the level plug till it just starts coming out of it, u obviously need to be on a level surface. the book says 2litres. i put about 2.2 in......

how can you overfill it, there is a gaping hole in the side it just drains out. You fill it till it dribbles out, the filler hole is perfectly alligned for that reason.

Tilt the car on an angle..lol
If your refering to Samurai's post, he never said he overfilled it. He just stated he managed to fill in 2.2 litres even thought the manual stated capacity is 2 litres.

Sif it says oil.. I'm sure it was 710.... lol
How are your first to second changes? I'm about to change my box oil because this is annoying the living **** out of me. I've also got some additive to make the shifts smoother, Nulon branded.
I really hope this remedies the problem. It was alot better after the syncros were replaced, but its come back again.
