Be aware that once the sound bug bites you may end up thinking that what you buy isn't good enough and you will want to upgrade. Do it once do it right is my motto, so with that in mind I would spend the money you have on a good head unit, one with three RCA out's, front, rear and sub RCA's. and a good set of front splits. Then save some more for the rest later. That's just a personal opinion.

I'll give you an idea of what I have:
Jaycar Response 4x100 amp
6.5" Response Kevlar splits
12" Venom sub
Pioneer DEH P4350 (discontinued, replaced by the 5350 Ithink)
All up without the headunit it cost me about 620 bucks.
With the HU it was just under 1k, like 970 or something
When you take into account the materials to build the sub box (I get all this cheap because I work in a hardware store, but it's still not expensive), carpet it, and wiring it all totalled to about 1100-1200 bucks.
And I've got the backing of a fair few ppl who say it'll chomp a shitload of systems in that price range, in SQ and SPL.
Im very happy with what I have :D

we all say that in the beginning... i have to go with funky on this one. do it once and do it right. get an alpine for $500 with 3 rca preouts and grab a good set of splits.. mho

I wasn't saying go real expensive stuff, I mean my head unit alone is $1,100, but to get something decent that you can build a system on will cost around 500+ for the head unit, throw in half decent splits to start and your money has been eaten up already. Yes you can go cheaper but when you out camping and want to crank it up so you can hear it at the campfire a cheap system will sound crap and distort. See if you get a HU without RCA jacks and then try to add a amp you have, well not a major hassle but in my opinion it's a waste of time, get a HU with RCAs and the amp hooks up easily.
I hate doof doof music, and building a sysytem with good tight bass and midbass response is a lot harder than going doof doof down the road.
But when your on a budget then it can get hard as most want it all straight away, heck maybe look second hand for a amp and sub and spend the most on a good HU and front splits, There is sometime good stuff on ebay, there is also crap but shop around, second hand and good condition you could probably get a system that would cost twice as much new

Hey KB, does your amp send a buzz through the speakers? I've heard that model amp suffered from a chronic electrical buzzing problem.
I was thinking of getting one but after I read about that I thought maybe two 2x150W amps might be better (not that I care that much about the extra db).

You mean a buzz like you can hear your engine revs?
I used to get a REALLY REALLY soft one, but I've since fixed that.
It was actually a problem with the lower powered models I've heard, but wouldn't be surprised if it happened in some of the 400 ones too.
Still it's a great amp.
I got a massive discount on it all too so I was lucky :D

Same with me, I listen to stuff like Dream Theater and then stuff like Jeff Buckley, so I was after SQ on a tight budget, and I believe I got the best I could for my money :)

Audison SRx3, Boston FS-60, JL12w0 will set you back $1500 installed with cables + a ported or sealed box. With the addition of a half decent headunit ( only 2 RCA's required ) you cant get anything better than that for under $2000.
shop around.. if you don't want to spend lots of cash, then stay away from jl audio. Some of the best sounding subs you can buy but they are expesive for someone that doesn't "dig" car audio that much.
for budget bass from a brandname, check out Fusion or Sony. Also, don't underestimate pioneer. The most important thing to know is that your amp is more important than your sub, quality wise.
I still say get a deck with 3 RCA's, as u might one day want them (like me).
I'd go:
Alpine deck w/3 RCA's - $500ish
Cadence front splits - $400ish (got 'em, they sound great, can get other cadence for less)
sony 6x9 - $150ish
fusion 2 channel encounter amp (150rmsx1 into 4ohm) - not sure, maybe $400 or cheaper?
for $1500, you got a pretty sexy system, even if muti-cultural (5 different brands).
However, if you are after a deck with 2 RCA's you can have my pioneer 5450deh. Last years mid range model 5 band eq, remote, detachable face, rotary sound control, looks good n sounds good.
$250. :D plus s/h :D
anyway, thats all.
Cam.
EDIT: If you have a bit more cash left over than you thought, maybe you could go a 5 channel fusion encounter amp instead of the 2 chan. More expensive, but it will amplify all 4 speakers + sub (40x4 + 125x1). Thats an even sexier system.

Important tip:
Make sure to budget in cables and EVERYTHING you'll need to install it, including the materials if you're going to build your sub box.
Or you'll do what I did and have the stuff sitting in your room until you save the money for it all lol!

There are a few Magnas here at work and they claim that the dash dimmer switch causes the buzzing noise on the stereo.
Warranty fix as there all newish cars.
