Hi all just after some advice on my wifes 94 excel
the car had a intermittent problem of wanting to rev up and down at idle
but of late its got really bad to the point of i wont let her drive it
It revs up and down in neutral and drive but the real strange thing is
its ok in reverse
had it in klosters and there were no faults in the computer
have changed both air and water temp sensors
just after some advice on things to get checked

i know its getting long in the tooth so going get her a new lancer
to go with my magna but need this car for another 6 months

thanks all

Could be the Throttle Position Sensor not being set properly.

Or the Idle Speed Control unit is rooted. I'm guessing TPS though.

Could also be the cold start idle switch.

On early swift GTis these would stuff up and the car would idle up and down. I am not sure what the excels have but it could also be this.

But I reckon the good money is on the TPS.

I would imagine its the TPS. My sis had that problem on her old excel. grabbed one from the wreckers for 50bucks. Good luck with the fault finding :)

Killbilly is spot on, its the Throttle Position Sensor.

Replace with a new one, cheaper brand should only cost $190 ish.

Improves the crap idle that Mitsubishis have. It builds of with crap on it and dosent alot it to swing side to side.

The condition is called hunting, and its commonly caused by air bubbles touching coolant sensors.

Warm up the motor to pressurise the system, loosen of the top most sensor in the system until water seeps out, then rev it a few times to stir it up. dont forget to tighten the sensor once the air is out.
